Villarreal CF History
Villarreal made its debut in La Liga in 1998 after playing for more than 60 years in lower Spanish divisions. However, they were relegated to the Segunda División after a tough first season. They got back to La Liga in 2000-01 and have been there ever since, with the exception of the 2012-13 season after finishing 18th the year prior.
Villarreal has finished in the top seven of the La Liga standings in all but one year since the 2013-14 season.
The story of Villarreal’s all-yellow kit is an interesting one. The son of the club president in 1947 traveled to Valencia to purchase new white shirts and black shorts, as were the team’s colors at the time, but he could only find yellow shirts and black shorts. The players agreed to the yellow shirts but voted to dye the shorts blue. The team kept this kit until going all yellow for its home kit and navy blue for its away colors in 2003-04.
Villarreal CF – Historical Events
The greatest moment in Villarreal’s history happened quite recently. The team won its first major trophy by defeating heavily favored Manchester United in the final of the 2020-21 UEFA Europa League. Villarreal held the team to a 1-1 draw before winning 11-10 in an all-time classic match.
Due to its impressive performances in La Liga stats, Villarreal has twice reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. It did so for the first time in 2006 and reached there again in 2022 before losing to Liverpool 5-2 on aggregate.
