The Grey Cup is the championship game of the Canadian Football League (CFL). The winners of the Eastern and Western Division playoffs compete in the Grey Cup game, making it one of the most anticipated sports events in Canada. The team that wins the Grey Cup is awarded the trophy of the same name, which is one of the oldest championship trophies in North American professional sports.
The CFL and NFL, while both professional football leagues, have some significant differences. The CFL has 12 players on the field per team, compared to 11 in the NFL. The CFL field measures 110 yards long and 65 yards wide with 20-yard end zones, larger than the NFL’s 100 yards long and 53.33 yards wide field with 10-yard end zones. Also, CFL teams have three downs to gain ten yards and secure a first down, whereas NFL teams have four downs. The CFL also uses a different scoring system for certain plays, like a single point (or “rouge”) for missed field goals that aren’t returned out of the end zone.
