Another high-quality week of racing action in the scores and odds is set. There will be no shortage of top horse races to bet on this week, with the action at Gulfstream Park seeing eight graded stakes races being staged.
It could be one of the most important early weeks of horse races in 2024, with the G2 Fountain of Youth offering huge clues for the Kentucky Derby in May. However, you can find our picks for the top horse races to bet on this week at BetUS below.
Fountain of Youth Stakes
The G2 Fountain of Youth is the feature on a stacked card at Gulfstream Park this weekend, with the race seeing a field of horses aged three compete over 1 1/16 miles. Orb was the most recent winner of this prep race and the Kentucky Derby, while trainer Todd Pletcher has achieved a record four wins.
This weekend’s race looks a thriller, with Dornoch making his return to the track for trainer Danny Gargan. The three-year-old last powered home to win the G2 Remsen Stakes, improving his record to two wins from four starts.
However, Locked could be challenging to oppose for the team of Pletcher and Jose Ortiz. The three-year-old finished third in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last year, and that form has been franked since with Timberlake landing the G2 Rebel last weekend. If taking to this assignment, he could be the standout contender.
- Pick: Locked
Gulfstream Park Mile
The Gulfstream Park Mile is another Grade 2 on the card this weekend, with a field of eight set to go to post. A purse of $200,000 is available for this race, with horses aged four and over eligible to enter. It has typically been a wide-open affair, and this year’s renewal is no different.
Wit boasts plenty of back form for Todd Pletcher, but he reverts back to the dirt after finishing third in the Belmont Turf Sprint Stakes last July. However, he holds some very interesting PPs after landing the Better Talk Now Stakes in 2022.
Tumbarumba comes into the race in solid form after winning at Gulfstream to land the G3 Fred W. Hooper Stakes in January. This test could suit him even more this weekend.
However, there’s a possibility that trainer Antonio Sano will take a chance on the talented Il Miracolo. The four-year-old was kept in very talented company throughout last season, and was far from disgraced when placing in the G2 Clark, G2 Fayette, and G1 Pennsylvania Derby. An improved effort is likely this weekend after his sixth in the G1 Pegasus World Cup.
- Pick: Il Miracolo
Davona Dale Stakes
The fillies will also be in action at Gulfstream Park this weekend, as the Davona Dale Stakes is a key prep for the Kentucky Oaks. It has been a Grade 2 affair since 1998, with notable winners of the race including Onlyforyou, Cathryn Sophia, and Wait A While.
Just FYI carries a penalty this weekend for trainer William Mott, but she could be one of the stars to consider when assessing the top horse races to bet on this week. The three-year-old maintained her perfect record when landing the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita in November, registering a career-best speed figure. Further improvement is extremely likely this weekend.
Todd Pletcher’s Leslie’s Rose could be a dark horse contender to consider when making horse racing predictions this weekend. She enjoyed an excellent return to the track when scoring at Gulfstream Park in January, registering a speed rating of 90. However, the favorite could be extremely hard to overlook when making a bet on horse racing this weekend.
- Pick: Just FYI
