Georgia Southwestern State Hurricanes vs. Jacksonville State Gamecocks Betting Preview
Jacksonville State Gamecocks
The Gamecocks enter the game having won four of their last six games but are coming off a loss to South Alabama by a final tally of 71-66.
Jacksonville State was led by Demaree King and Juwan Perdue, who combined to score 44 of the team’s 66 points on 17-27 shooting from the floor. Unfortunately for the Gamecocks, they could not play any sort of defense as the Jaguars put a ridiculous 1.15 points per possession number up and earned the home victory.
This is a typical post-Christmas break game for some division one opponents on the NCAAB schedule. As the Gamecocks have not played since December 13th, coach Ray Harper is looking to get his club back on the floor against some kind of competition where they can run their sets and blow some of the carbon out of their lungs. We are definitely siding with the Gamecocks in our GSS vs Jacksonville State picks.
One interesting turn of events is the recent offensive output by Perdue for the Gamecocks. The 6’6” junior forward only averages 8.8 points per game this season and 4.2 over his 86-game career but has 13.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, nearly two assists, a steal, and 1.3 blocks per game over his last three contests. He is shooting a ridiculous 78.9% from the field and 88.2% within the arc and is among the college basketball players to watch in this one.
Something else to monitor is the college basketball injury report and whether or not Amanze Ngumezi will return to the lineup for Coach Harper. A former highly regarded recruit out of Georgia, Ngumezi is averaging 10.4 points and 3.6 rebounds for the Gamecocks this season.
Unfortunately for the team, he has only played in two of the team’s previous seven games. In those two contests, he was not very effective in limited minutes, so hopefully, the long break has enabled him to recover.
As of now, the injury is unknown, but the big man did miss the entire 2021-22 season with a torn ACL. Ngumezi also spent two seasons at Georgia before moving on; he averaged 6.1 points and 2.4 rebounds per game for the Bulldogs in his last season under then-head coach Tom Crean.
Georgia Southwestern State Hurricanes
Georgia Southwestern enters the game with a 5-4 record on the season and has lost three of its previous four games. All three losses have been by double-digit margins, with their lone victory over the stretch coming against Albany State by a 74-56 count.
Their last outing was against USC Aiken on December 13th, which ended in a 67-54 loss. They were led by Devon Higgs, who scored 10 points while also collecting six rebounds and blocking four shots. Philip Burwell and Jaylen Jordan each contributed nine points, while Jamari Dean led the team in rebounding with seven rips.
The Hurricanes do not boast any high-level scorers but are led by sophomore guard Jarrett Adderton who averages 14 points per game. Despite multiple 20+ point outputs over the season, Adderton averages just 3.5 points over his last two games.
Georgia Southwestern State vs. Jacksonville State Betting Preview
This is one of very few NCAAB games today and could be worth the watch in case you need to make a pick in your office pool come tournament time. Coach Harper has taken the Gamecocks to the NCAA tournament twice during his six-year stint in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
As far as GSS vs Jacksonville State picks go, a speculative line is available for the total, which is 146 points. Given the Gamecocks’ ability to shoot the ball from deep, take the over. The Hurricanes do not take a ton of triples and only make about 4.4 per game while shooting under 33% as a team.
