The Italian Open, also known as the Internazionali BNL d’Italia for sponsorship purposes, is one of nine ATP Tour Masters 1000 tennis events this season and follows another Masters 1000 event in Madrid, which was won by Andrey Rublev. The outdoor clay court tournament begins on May 8 and runs until May 19 at the Foro Italico in Rome, Italy.
Let’s take a look at some of the past winners, the Italian Open odds, and Italian Open betting tips for the tournament.

Past Champions
Daniil Medvedev is the defending champion at the Italian Open. He won the title in Rome for the first time in 2023 after beating Holger Rune 7-5, 7-5 in the final. Novak Djokovic, the current world No. 1, is a six-time champion and last won in 2022, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas. Rafael Nadal won the tournament 10 times from 2005 to 2021 and is using a protected ranking to participate in this year’s tournament.
Other former champions in Rome include Alexander Zverev (2017) and Andy Murray (2016). Murray, Zverev, and Medvedev are the only players outside of Nadal and Djokovic to win here since 2005.

Top-3 Seeds
Novak Djokovic
Djokovic is the top seed and favored in Italian Open odds, but his tennis stats haven’t been as good this year as in year’s past. He lost to Jannik Sinner, who withdrew from the 2024 Italian Open due to injury, in the semi-finals of the Australian Open and then suffered one of the most unlikely losses of his career at Indian Wells, losing to lucky loser Luca Nardi in the Round of 32.
Djokovic last played at the Monte-Carlo Masters, where he lost to Casper Ruud in the semi-final. He’s 11-4 this season, including 3-1 on clay. He has three losses on outdoor hard courts already and had just two combined in the last two years.
Daniil Medvedev
Medvedev will be popular among Italian Open picks as the defending champion. He withdrew from his quarter-final match last week in Madrid against Jiri Lehecka due to injury, but is still expected to defend his title in Rome. Bettors should be cautious of his status this week, however.
Medvedev is 22-6 this season and has yet to win a title, coming up short most notably as runner-up in the Australian Open and Indian Wells. He was also a semi-finalist in Dubai and Miami.
Alexander Zverev
Like Medvedev, Zverev is chasing his first title this season. The talented German has dealt with off-court issues this year and that may be affecting his game. He’s coming off a disappointing Round of 16 exit at the Madrid Open and before that lost to Cristian Garin in the Round of 16 at the Bavarian International, where he was favored as the top seed. He lost in the Round of 16 to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Monte-Carlo Masters the week prior.

Popular Underdog Picks
Rune, the runner-up in 2023, is a good bet in the Italian Open odds. The 21-year-old Dane has had an up-and-down season, showing flashes of brilliance at different times throughout the season while also struggling with inconsistency. He has reached at least the quarter-finals in four of his last six events.
Further down the list for the Italian Open odds, Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime could be a decent longshot pick. The 23-year-old is a former top-10 player who has struggled during the last two years, but seemed to return to form in Madrid, reaching the final before losing a tight match against Rublev. Three of his wins were via walkover, but he did score an impressive confidence-building win over Casper Ruud, who won the week prior in Barcelona.
Who to Fade
Medvedev and Zverev aren’t great betting options for the Italian Open due to injury and inconsistent play, respectively. They also won’t have favorable betting odds. Rublev, the fourth seed, is another player to avoid. He was 1-4 in his last five matches coming into Madrid and isn’t likely to win consecutive tournaments, especially with such a loaded field.
Italian Open Final Prediction
In the Italian Open final, our tennis picks lean toward Novak Djokovic to emerge victorious over Holger Rune.
