Midtjylland General Info

Midtjylland, or Central Jutland, is a Danish top-flight football club in Ikast and Herning in parts of Jutland. It was a result of a merger between the Herning Fremad and Ikast FS, and since it became a pro club, the team continued to be a top side in the Danish Superliga, competing as one of the best teams.

The team’s nicknames are Ulvene, The Wolves, and Helens Drenge, which means The Boys of the Moor. The club’s name is also shortened to FCM, and they play their football at the MCH Arena, which has a capacity of 11,432, with Cliff Crown overseeing its operations.

Midtjylland History

FC Midtjylland was created by a carpenter, Johnny Rune, who also owns a wood-supply industry, and Steen Hessel, an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer. They came together to unite two traditional teams who were strong rivals at the time. Ikast FS was created in 1935, while Herning Fremad was founded in 1918.

Even though both teams were strong rivals, they never played a critical role in the Danish league and were never top teams. Therefore, it seemed perfectly fine to merge both sides, and by 1999, a deal was finalized, and Midtjylland was born. By 2000, the team entered the Danish Superliga and started their pro journey.

Since becoming a top-flight team, Midtjylland stats that they have had some successes. They’ve raised the bar in the league and continued to put pressure on the top teams. It wasn’t until the year 2000 before Midtjylland entered the top flight level. However, they’ve won the league three times and been runners-up five times.

Historical Events

Midtjylland has had some top-notch moments throughout history. The first was when they blazed through the 1st Division after completing the merger. After that, they made it into the Superliga, and a few years later, they got close to winning the competition when they got second place in the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons.

However, it wasn’t until 14 years after they entered the Superliga that they won their first title. They were an impressive side in the 2014-15 season, as they blazed through the game and became champions of Denmark. The following season they made it into the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds but ended up playing in the Europa League.

In the 2020-21 season, they finally made it into the UEFA Champions League group stages, but they couldn’t make it past the group rounds as they finished fourth in Group D.
