In Germany, soccer is one of the oldest active sports. The sport has been a source of joy for many fans as they follow different teams. Among the oldest clubs in Germany is Werder Bremen. The club has been around for more than a century and has remained a top team despite going through some turbulent years.

Werder Bremen has seen stints in various divisions in the German pro leagues and has made many appearances in European tournaments. However, Werder Bremen stats have been solid for most parts of the club’s history.

Werder Bremen General Info

Werder Bremen, whose full name is Sportverein Werder Bremen von 1899 e. V., is a top-division club in Germany. The team always seems to be in the mix near the top of the table, and Werder Bremen betting is a solid choice, given the club ranks third in all-time Bundesliga wins.

After the club was created, it went through different phases and has undergone multiple nickname changes. It started with Die Werderaner, which translates to “The River Islanders.” Aside from that, Die Grun-WeiBen, which translates as “The Green-Whites,” a nod to the club’s official colors.

As of writing, the team’s head coach is Ole Werner. Werder Bremer plays at Weserstadion, which is based in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. The stadium has a capacity of 42,100. Aside from green and white, the team has black and pink colors in its collection which it brings out on special occasions.

Werder Bremen History

Werder Bremen has been around since 1899, at the very beginning of club football in Germany. With more than 120 years of existence, it’s safe to say the club has a storied history, especially with four Bundesliga titles, seven Bundesliga runner-up appearances, and a European Cup title in the 1991-92 season.

The club has also made six appearances in the Champions League but has not advanced past the Round of 16.

Werder Bremen has not made a habit of retiring jersey numbers; however, they retired kit number 12 in honor of their fans, whom the club refers to as the “12th Man.” Despite a smaller stadium capacity than some of the author Bundesliga sides, Werder Bremen tends to pack the stands and be an imposing place for opponents to play.

Legendary striker Miroslav Klose got his Bundesliga start with Werder Bremen, as it was his second professional side. Klose made 89 appearances with Werder Bremen, scoring 53 goals for the club from 2004-07. It was his second-highest club total outside of Lazio, where Klose finished his career in 2016; Klose scored 54 goals with Lazio.

Werder Bremen Records

Goalkeeper Dieter Burdenski leads Werder Bremen in career appearances with 479 games between 1972 and 1988. Burdenski also scored a goal during penalty kicks during a 3-2 loss to VfB Stuttgart.

Horst-Dieter Höttges and Karl-Heinz Kamp are the only other Bremen players to reach 400 appearances with the club.

Two Werder Bremen players broke the 100-goal mark for their careers. Midfielder Marco Bode was the first to accomplish the milestone, finishing with 101. However, he was passed by Claudio Pizarro, who scored his 109th for the club in 2020. Pizarro also set this mark in 250 appearances, compared to Bode’s 379.
