Team History

The Atlanta United FC were an expansion team that joined the MLS before the beginning of the 2017 season as they marked their first game on March 5, 2018, at Bobby Dodd Stadium and had a massive 55,297 fans in attendance. A weak later, they recorded their first win with a 6-1 victory over the Minnesota United FC.

There are two numbers already retired by the franchise, and that is the numbers 17 and 44. The number 17 was retired for the fans as it signifies their inaugural season with the MLS. The number 44 was retired after the passing of legendary Atlanta Braves Hank Aaron, as did all of the Atlanta-based sports teams on the amateur and professional level.

Atlanta United FC Records

The best player in the franchise has been forward Josef Martinez as he has the franchise lead with 107 total goals scored (94 in MLS play) while no other play has recorded more than 22. He held the record for most goals scored in a single season during 2018 with 31, before Carlos Vela surpassed him the following season.

In 159 career games, the Atlanta United FC have done well with a 73-50-6 record with a 266-194 goal difference (+72 goal differential). They have put up solid team stats and are looking to continue their solid play throughout the rest of this season and beyond.

Championships Won

It did not take long for the franchise to find a championship, as in their second season in the MLS, they won the 2018 MLS Cup by defeating the Portland TImbers 2-0 in front of 73,019 fans (the largest attendance for a MLS Cup game). In addition, they won the U.S. Open Cup and the Campeons Cup during the 2019 season.

Historical Events

Nothing will top their MLS Cup victory in the 2018 season, but they have done well throughout their short time in the MLS. They have played well as they picked up a 3-2 Campeones Cup victory over America against the winners of the 2019 Campeon de Campeones. Darlington Nagbe was named the man of the match and this was the first time the MLS Cup Winner won the game as well.

Championship Won by the Team

Atlanta United FC betting must have been nice as they won the 2018 MLS Cup in their second year in the league. They also won both the U.S. Open Cup and the Campeons Cup in 2019 following their MLS Cup victory to reign supreme in North American soccer.

The team had four departures via transfers as right winger Tyler Wolff, center-forward Ronaldo Cisneros, center-back Juan Jose Purata, and goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth all are no longer on the team. They, however, added left winger Edwin Mosquera, goalkeeper Raul Gudino, right-back Aiden McFadden, central midfield Ajani Fortune, center-back Noah Cobb, goalkeeper Justin Garces, center-back Efrain Morales, and right-back Erik Centeno.

Despite the success, there has not been many head coaches that have stayed with the team. Of course, the most accomplished coach for the team has been their first coach Gerardo Martino, who won the MLS Cup in 2018.
