Current Squad / Roster

Team History

Austin FC joined the MLS on October 12, 2018, officially joining the MLS schedule for the 2021 season. The city of Austin has had a few different professional soccer teams call the capital of Texas home, none of which were major league sports franchises during their time in Austin. The current Orlando City SC was initially the Austin Aztex of the USL First Division, leaving Austin in 2010.

The Aztex name was resurrected for the Austin Aztex of the USL Premier Development League, moving to the USL in 2014. This iteration of the Aztex went on indefinite hiatus after the 2015 Memorial Day floods damaged their stadium and a suitable replacement couldn’t be found. The City of Austin has had representation in the USL since 2019, with Austin Bold FC. However, Austin Bold FC is likely moving to Fort Worth, leaving Austin FC as the show in the Texas capital.

Austin FC played their first game in the MLS during the 2021 season. Their inaugural season was similar to many first-year franchises: Austin struggled, finishing 24th overall in MLS Standings. Austin FC’s stats from 2021 speak to those struggles, with the club posting a 9-4-21 record, and having a -21 goal differential. The 2022 MLS season has been more successful, with Austin FC ranked among the league’s best. There will be a shift in Austin FC’s betting trends, shifting from the obvious underdog to favorite in MLS odds.

Austin FC Records

For a team in its second season, Austin FC doesn’t have many established team records. However, Austin FC did set an MLS record, opening the 2022 season and scoring an MLS record 10 goals in their first two games.

Austin FC’s first major transfer signing is the squad’s most potent offensive weapon and goal-scoring record holder. Argentinian forward Sebastián Driussi has scored 21 goals for Austin FC, leading the team in 2022 and all-time. American-born Brad Stuver has been Austin FC’s goalkeeper since the squad’s first match and is their statistical record holder in all goalkeeping statistics.

Over their short tenure in MLS, Austin FC has only played 58 games at the time of publication. Austin FC has played to a 21-10-26 record, scoring 85 goals and giving up 87 goals.

Championships Won

Historical Events

In the squad’s short history, there have been a few major historical events. Being a new franchise, simply announcing the establishment of the franchise and playing their first game against MLS stalwarts the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The second major historical event for Austin FC is winning their first game in franchise history. Austin FC defeated the Colorado Rapids 3-1 on April 24th, 2021 for the first victory in the club’s history. Austin FC’s first Designated Player in franchise history led the way, as Cecilio Dominguez scored twice helping Austin FC to their first win.

The most recent historical event was the transfer signing of Forward Sebastián Driussi from Zenit St. Petersburg for a $7 million transfer fee. Driussi has been the most impactful player in Austin FC’s short history.

Championship Won by Austin FC

Austin FC hasn’t had much of a chance to win championships in their short existence. However, the squad’s 2022 successful transformation from underdog to favorite across MLS betting stats and odds has landed Austin FC their first championship in 2022.

The Copa Tejas was created by supporters of San Antonio FC to determine the best team in Texas in 2019. Another Austin Based team, Austin Bold FC of the USL was the first Austin Based team to win the Copa Tejas in 2019. Austin FC has captured the Division 1 2022 Copa Tejas having the best record across the 2022 season in head-to-head matches with their interstate MLS rivals.

2022 will mark the second awarding of the Copa Tejas Shield: similar to the MLS Supporters Shield, scoring is based on regular season games, to fairly rank all of Texas’ soccer clubs, including MLS, USL, and NWSL.

Ecuadorian Forward Washington Byrån Corozo Becerra was acquired on loan from Sporting Cristal in Peru’s Liga 1. Argentinian forward Emiliano Rigoni was transferred to Austin FC from Sáo Paulo FC for $3.67 million in July 2022. Returning from loan to Club Atlético River Plate of the Argentine Primera División to Austin FC is Argentinian midfielder Tomás Pochettino.

Departing Austin FC is Cecilio Andres Dominguez Ruiz, free to pursue play anywhere he chooses. American-born defender Charlie Asensio was transferred out on loan to Charleston Battery of the USL.

There has only been one coach in Austin FC’s shirt history, making this an easy pick. Former D.C. United forward Josh Wolff has been Austin FC’s only coach making him the greatest coach in Austin FC history.
