Team History

The Chicago Fire FC was the first expansion team in a brand-new MLS at the point as they joined for the 1998 season, the third year of the MLS being a thing. As of this writing, they are seventh in MLS standings as we approach towards the end of the MLS schedule

They have also made the MLS Cup two other seasons as they lost 1-0 to the Kansas City Wizards in the 2000 season as well as losing 4-2 in 2003 against the San Jose Earthquakes. Their .333 winning percentage in the MLS Cup is tied for the worst in MLS history of teams that have won at least one championship.

Chicago Fire FC Records

Heading into the 2022 MLS season, the team has a .499 winning percentage with a 285-286-187 record as well as being 21-17-5 (.547 winning percentage) in the postseason. The Chicago Fire FC stats have Ante Razov scoring 76 goals as a member of the club, which was the most of any player in the franchise. However, Nemanja Nikolic has the most goals per game in the franchise with 0.53 goals.

In terms of goalkeeping, Zach Thorton has been the best the team has ever seen as he holds the franchise record with minutes in goal (19,205), goals against average (1.24), winning percentage (.600), wins (109), saves (801), and shutouts (57). It is going to be difficult to expect anyone to get close to the success that he has and betting on Chicago Fire FC to have as successful of a goalie.

Championships Won

The biggest thing that has happened to this franchise was during their inaugural season in 1998 as they captured the MLS Cup with a 2-0 victory over D.C. United inside of the Rose Bowl.  Kerzy Podbrozny scored in the 29th minute, while Diego Gutierrez also added a goal in the 45th minute.

The transfer market has been in full effect for the team as they have goalkeeper Gabriel Sloniana, forward Christopher Mueller, midfielder Jairo Torres, midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri, forward Kacper Przybylko, defender Rafael Czichos, and forward Jhon Duran transferred to the team. They also have just one player out on transfer as forward Chinonso Offor is with CF Montreal.

The team’s best coach was their inaugural coach Bob Bradley as he was the coach for the first five seasons (1998-2002) and had a 103-61-33 record throughout his tenure with the team. He was the coach for the 1998 MLS Cup and won the U.S. Open Cup twice (1998 and 2000).
