Team History

The story of Inter Miami CF actually begins in Los Angeles in 2007, with a provision in David Beckham’s contract. That provision allowed Beckham to purchase an MLS franchise in any city except New York. MLS had long expressed interest in a Miami-based franchise dating back to 2012.

Beckham exercised his option in 2014. However, the Miami MLS franchise could not secure a new stadium deal, delaying their actual expansion until January 29, 2018, starting play in the 2020 season. Since that first game, Inter Miami CF’s stats and Inter Miami CF’s betting trends tell the story of a new and struggling franchise.

Historical Events

After a long wait, a Miami-based MLS team began play on March 1, 2020 – a losing effort to Los Angeles FC 1-0. The first game in franchise history is a historical event for any team but more so for Inter Miami CF, as it took the group six years to go from being awarded a franchise to playing a game.

Inter Miami CF’s first win is a maker historical moment for the squad. Inter Miami defeated inner-state rivals Orlando City SC 3-2 on  August 23, 2020 – something Miami has only managed once more in their short history.

Bad Boys, Bad Boys. In their second season as the perennial underdog on MLS odds, Inter Miami CF received sanctions from MLS for violating roster rules during 2020. The signings of Blaise Matuidi and Andrés Reyes used targets allocation money (TAM) to comply with the salary cap and to leave their Designated Player spots free.

Inter Miami exceeded the TAM maximum of $1.61 million per player. The punishment: a $2 million fine, reduced Inter Miami CF’s allocation dollars by $2.27 million for the 2022 and 2023 seasons, and individual punishment for Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas and former sporting director Paul McDonough.

Championship Won by Inter Miami CF

Inter Miami has won no championships.

Inter Miami has found itself at the bottom of MLS standings in its two seasons in the MLS competition. As for regional derbies, Inter Miami CF has a yet-to-be-named interstate rivalry with Orlando City SC. Even if the Inter Miami/Orlando City rivalry did have a name, Inter Miami still wouldn’t have a derby championship to claim, having a 2-4-3 (Wins-draws-losses) against Orlando City.

Inter Miami CF has Indiana Vassilev (F) (Aston Villa Sub 21) and Julián Carranza (F) (Philadelphia Union) out on loan and returning during 2022-2023. Inter Miami has transferred in Alejandro Pozuelo (M) from Toronto FC and Corentin Jean from Lens (F) , while Rodolfo Pizarro (M) is returning from a loan to Monterrey.

Inter Miami has transferred out Clémont Diop (G) to New England Revolution, Edison Azcona (D) to El Paso Locomotive, Leonardo Campana (F) to Wolves, and Mohammed Adams (M) to Al Shabab.

Rumors have Inter Miami FC making a significant international transfer, with the club linked to a potential acquisition of Argentinian Superstar Lionel Messi from Paris St. Germain.

Inter Miami CF has had two coaches in their short tenure on the MLS Schedule: Diego Alonso and Phil Neville. The competition between the two for the honor of Inter Miami CF’s best coaches isn’t close. On win percentage alone, Neville gets the nod having a 35.29% winning percentage, with a record of 12 wins, 5 draws, and 17 losses.
