Current Squad / Roster

Founded in 1994, the LA Galaxy has a long history as one of MLS’ charter teams. More importantly, the LA Galaxy are among the most successful franchises in MLS, with a history filled with international stars. The LA Galaxy stats are a testament to the Galaxy’s success as a franchise. However, in recent times the Galaxy has found itself as the underdog in MLS odds.

The LA Galaxy play in two derbies: the California Clássico (vs San Jose Earthquakes) and the El Tráfico with Los Angeles FC (formerly Chivas FC). Until 2014, the Galaxy played in the SuperClasico against inner-city rival Chivas FC. Lothar Osiander was the LA Galaxy’s first head coach.

Team History

The LA Galaxy was founded in 1994, playing their first game on the MLS schedule in 1996, losing the inaugural MLS Cup to D.C. United on a golden goal. The Galaxy won their first championship claiming the MLS Supporters Shield in 1998. The LA Galaxy were unsuccessful in their first three MLS Cup appearances, winning their first MLS Cup in 2002. Despite their early struggles in MLS Cup finals, the Galaxy was the first MLS team to Five MLS Cup Championships.

Historical Events

Many of the LA Galaxy’s historical events are related to international player acquisitions. Star of the 1994 World Cup (held in America) Mexican goalkeeper Jorge Campos was an early international superstar to join the Galaxy.

Ireland National Team Captain and leading scorer, Robbie Keane signed with the LA Galaxy in 2011, contributing to the squad’s most successful period. Keane was the 2014 MLS MVP and scored the MLS Cup-winning goal against the New England Revolution.

Zlatan Ibrahimovič left Manchester United and joined the LA Galaxy in 2018, taking out a full-page ad simply stating “ Dear Los Angeles, You’re Welcome” in the Los Angeles Times to announce his arrival.

The LA Galaxies biggest International player acquisition thrust a spotlight onto the league and increased sponsorship of the team. The squad signed English superstar David Beckham from Real Madrid in 2007 to a five-year contract. Beckham’s contract was worth $32.5 million and had the provision that he could purchase an MLS franchise for $25 million – Beckham cashed in on this provision and is the current president and co-owner of Inter Miami CF. To make Beckham’s contract work under the salary cap, the league introduced the now-common Designated Player Rule.
