Team History

The Portland Timbers have been a part of the MLS since the 2011 season and brought soccer to Portland, Oregon professionally as an expansion club. In the years to follow, they have reached the pinnacle of success there and have been doing well as a franchise as a whole. They have a lot of history for an expansion team so let’s dive into that!

Portland Timbers Records

Midfielder Diego Valeri holds the record for most goals scored as a member of the Timbers with 100 as well as having 100 career assists with the team. No other player has reached 35 of both as a member of the club.

Championships Won

The Portland Timbers won one championship trophy throughout their existence as a franchise and that was in 2015 when they won the MLS Cup. They won the MLS is Back Tournament in 2020 as well. They were not huge favorites in the MLS odds during their run either.

Historical Events

One of the most historical events was in the 2015 MLS Playoffs as they faced off against Sporting Kansas City. This game would be coined as the “Double Post” game in the knockout round of the MLS Playoffs as both teams scored a goal going into extra time and then each scored in extra time so it was 2-2 heading into penalty kicks. Sporting rookie Saad Abdu-Salaam went for his kick and it hit off of both posts before being a miss that is what sparked a legend as the Timbers came back and won and took the momentum to the MLS Cup.

Championship Won by the Team

The Portland Timbers have one MLS Cup already under their belt as they defeated the Columbus Crew back in 2015 at Mapfre Stadium 2-1 to capture their first and only MLS Cup. Midfielder Dego Valeri scored with 27 seconds of the clock and in the seventh minute, left winger Rodney Wallace scored to get an early 2-0 lead, which they never looked back on. They ended up awarding Valeri the game’s MVP with the fastest goal in MLS Cup history.

Transfers can be a huge reason why the MLS betting stats look completely different than you can expect. There have been a handful of transfers as forward Tega Ikoba (free) from the UNC Tar Heels, goalkeeper David Bingham (free) from no team, goalkeeper Justin vom Steeg (undisclosed) from the LA Galaxy, midfielder David Ayala (undisclosed) from Estudiantes de la Plata, and defender Juan Mosquera (undisclosed) from Independiente Medellin. They only have a single player out on transfer and that is Diego Valeri (undisclosed) to Lanus.

The Portland Timbers have only had a few coaches over their decade-plus run so far in MLS and one of their best coaches was Caleb Porter, who was with the team from 2013-2017. He had an 85-57-60 record in 202 career games and had a +58 goal difference. He also was the head coach of the MLS Cup team, so that always helps as well.

Then we need to talk about current head coach Giovanni Savarese. He took the job after Porter and in 179 career games as the coach, he has a 79-44-56 record with a +43 goal difference. The ability to keep coaches for a few years shows the stability of the club as a whole. All in all, these two coaches made the MLS standings a little tighter.
