Atlanta United Dealing with Injuries
The team has had a devastating season with injuries, losing three of their top players, likely for the season. The injuries have been so bad for Atlanta that they have had only five players start 10 games, the lowest number in the league for teams with at least 13 games played.
Before this season Bobby Shuttleworth signed on as a backup to Brad Guzan. But when the veteran keeper went down with an Achilles injury, Shuttleworth was thrust into a starting role. He’s played over 330 MLS games since 2010 with three clubs and has been up to the task, allowing seven goals in seven games this season.
Losing center defender Miles Robinson was also a big blow to the Five Stripes when he also went down with an Achilles injury. Robinson made big strides in World Cup qualifying for the U.S. this cycle and his advancement was paying off for Atlanta to start the season. They have struggled to replace Robinson as George Campbell and Ronald Hernandez have also dealt with injuries.
Ronaldo Cisneros leads Atlanta with four goals on the season while Thiago Almada, Marcelino Moreno and super-sub Dom Dwyer all have three. Almada got a red card against Columbus before the break and will be suspended against Miami. Josef Martinez has two goals and two assists and really needs to regain his 2018-19 form if Atlanta is going to contend for an MLS playoff run.
Atlanta United Projected Lineup: GK – Bobby Shuttleworth. D – Alan Franco, George Campbell, Alex De John, Brooks Lennon. MF – Mattheus Rossetto, Franco Ibarra, Luiz Araujo, Marcelino Moreno. FW – Josef Martinez, Ronaldo Cisneros.
Atlanta United Injuries: Defender Miles Robinson (out – Achilles). Goalkeeper Brad Guzan (out – Achilles), Ronald Hernandez (out – knee), Andrew Gutman (out – quad).
Inter Miami in Transition
Inter Miami got some bad news this week when midfielder Robbie Robinson was ruled out for at least four months. Robinson ruptured a tendon in his hamstring in the 2-1 win over Portland on May 28. The former first-round draft pick has five goals over the last two, injury-plagued seasons.
Leonardo Campana has taken over the Miami offense with seven of their 15 MLS goals this season. Former Juventus star Gonzalo Higuain has been relegated to bench duty lately and he has two goals on the campaign, with one assist. Robert Taylor is the only other player with more than one goal and no Miami player has more than two assists in MLS action this season.
The defense has been settled by keeper Drake Callender and USMNT defender DeAndre Yedlin. Callender is second in MLS in save percentage (80.0) and has allowed seven goals in six starts. He also leads the MLS with 4.7 saves per 90 minutes as Miami allows nearly 10 shots per game.
Inter Miami Projected Lineup: GK: Drake Callender. D – Chris McVey, DeAndre Yedlin, Damion Lowe, Ryan Sailor. MF – Jean Mota, Bryce Duke, Gregore, Indiana Vassilev, Ariel Lassiter. FW – Leonardo Campana
Team B Injuries: D Kieran Gibbs (out – hamstring). D – Brek Shea (out – hamstring). MF – Robbie Robinson (out – hamstring).
