The Dallas Cowboys are -7 point home favorites on Sunday afternoon against the New York Giants. That number may seem on the small side for a Dallas team on a roll with three straight wins, but this is also a meeting of conference foes.
New York has some confidence after getting their first win of the season last Sunday. These two teams split their head-to-head series last season, with each winning on their home field. The total margin of victory in the two games was 7 points, however.
Can Jones Lead Giants to the Win?
The Giants look rough in a 1-3 start to the 2021 season, but that mark includes a 30-29 defeat to Washington and a 17-14 loss to the Falcons. A different bounce here or there, and this matchup suddenly becomes a meeting of two 3-1 NFC East teams.
Of course, New York did not win those close games against WFT and Atlanta, but the Giants do have some momentum flowing after a 27-21 OT win over the Saints last week. Perhaps New Orleans is just bad, but it’s still impressive that NYG had two 1-play scoring drives last Sunday.
New York was down 21-10 in the 4th quarter last week, but QB Daniel Jones put the team on his back with 402 yards passing and 2 TD. Saquon Barkley looks to be on his way back from a full recovery of last year’s torn ACL after posting 126 total yards with two TD vs. New Orleans.
While New York’s offense may be coming around, their defense gave up 235 yards passing to the Saints, which is New Orleans’ season high. Dak Prescott has led the Cowboys to a #3 overall so far, and Dallas has started to get their running game going too. This game is definitely a challenge for NYG.
Dallas Running Game Coming Around
Prescott has been great in his return from a compound fracture in his ankle last season. Sunday will be a milestone game, though, as the injury occurred in the same stadium, against the same opponent, and in the same week of the year when he suffered that season-ending injury last October 11th.
Even with minimal preseason work, Prescott has returned to complete over 75% of his passes with 10 TD and 2 INT. He’s thrown 7 TD to 0 INT the last two weeks and is especially gaining rapport with TE Dalton Schultz, who has grabbed three of those TD receptions.
Most importantly, though, the Cowboys’ passing potency has allowed their running game to start thriving. Zeke Elliott has gone for 95 and 143 yards the last two weeks in what seem like throwback performances. Tony Pollard has added three straight 60+ yard games to fully diversify this offense.
Giants at Cowboys Pick
While Dallas has looked great this year, especially offensively, a TD is just too much to give up in this matchup. Elliott is coming around for the Cowboys, but so is Barkley for the Giants.
Prescott is unstoppable, but Jones also threw for 400+ yards last week while missing two of his top targets.
Pick: Giants +7
