The Suns now hold the title of the best team in the NBA with their 24-5 record, which is a half-game better than the Golden State Warriors. Phoenix is 8-2 over their previous ten contests, including a recent 137-106 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Lakers have dropped two consecutive games, including a competitive 115-110 loss against the Bulls in Chicago on Sunday. Los Angeles is 6-4 over their last ten games.
Suns at Lakers Stats
Looking at the Phoenix Suns stats
People questioned how good the Suns were going to continue to be after Devin Booker got injured a few weeks ago. The Suns responded by continuing to dominate the competition. Now with Booker back in the lineup, Phoenix appears scarier than ever.
The Suns rank third overall in points per game as a team with 112. They are also in the top 10 in the following categories; field goal percentage, three-point percentage, rebounds per game, and assists per game.
With Booker back in the rotation, the Suns have a plethora of offensive weapons. In the win against Charlotte, Phoenix featured nine different players with double-digit points.
The big three of Booker, Chris Paul, and DeAndre Ayton undeniably stands out. But the depth of this team is what sets them apart with quality role players such as Jae Crowder, Mikal Bridges, and JaVale McGee, among many others.
The Suns will continue to be one of the best teams in the NBA as long as they can stay healthy.
Looking at the Los Angeles Lakers stats
The Los Angeles Lakers have been up and down all year long. Right when it seemed they were on the precipice of beginning a hot streak, they went and lost two straight games. To make matters worse, Anthony Davis is expected to miss around a month of time due to a knee injury.
Fortunately for Davis, the injury does not seem to be as concerning as originally thought. Surgery is not expected to be required.
But the Lakers have to find a way to win without their star big man. The Lakers don’t have many solid options at power forward and center with Davis out. The veteran tandem of Dwight Howard and DeAndre Jordan has underwhelmed so far in 2021.
LeBron James is having a tremendous year. The superstar is averaging 25.9 points, 6.8 assists, and 6.6 rebounds per game. But James is approaching his 37th birthday, and durability could become an issue as the year rolls on.
When you combine that with the inefficient play of Russell Westbrook and the veteran-heavy roster Los Angeles features, one has to wonder if the Lakers will truly be contenders this season.
We will see how they perform without Davis in this matchup against Phoenix.
