Minnesota Twins Summary

The Twins are coming off a last-place 2021 season that saw them go 73-89 after winning the AL Central back-to-back years in 2019 and 2020. But 2022 can be the year for the Twins to get back to their winning ways. The Twins will have new personnel on their coaching staff as they look to get the team back on the right track.

While the Twins lost some players to free agency at the start of the offseason, they have picked up some players on the market. With an AL Central with some tough teams, the Twins will need to work with their new coaches as they attempt to make the postseason for 2022. Only time will tell if the Twins’ offseason moves will work out for the new season.

Minnesota Twins History

The Minnesota Twins organization was founded in 1894 as the Kansas City Blues, a minor league baseball team. When the team joined the American League in 1901, they would move to Washington D.C. and be known as the Washington Senators and Washington Nationals during their time in Washington D.C. from 1901-1960. The Twins have enjoyed more success in Minnesota than they did in Washington. However, not everything in Minnesota has been good for the team.

Even though the Twins would become the first-ever team to sweep in the World Series when they did so in 1987, they would want out of Minnesota. Reasons for the desire to move the team stemmed from having to share a stadium with the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings and also because they had a record of not generating enough revenue to operate.

While a judge forced the Twins to stay in their stadium until their contract was up, the governor of Minnesota would sign a bill in 2006 that approved funding of a new stadium. By 2010, the Twins would move to their new ballpark, Target Field.

2022 Key Stats

The Twins are coming into 2022 with a mixed bag of offensive stats from 2021. For the 2021 season, the Twins were second in home runs, seventh in runs, and eighth in hits out of 15 teams in the AL. Their top RBI generator, Jorge Polanco, is back for the 2022 season and will look to keep up his production for the Twins. If the Twins improve on last year’s offensive numbers, they could have a chance to win more games.

On the pitching side, the Twins posted the second-worst ERA by a team in the AL, averaging a 4.83 ERA among all Twins pitchers for the 2021 season. The Twins went out in the offseason to load up on pitchers to address the situation. For 2022, the Twins brought back starting pitcher Michael Pineda, who had nine wins with a 3.62 ERA for 2021.

The Twins also acquired struggling starting pitcher Dylan Bundy, who had a 2-9 record and a 6.06 ERA in 2021 for the Los Angeles Angels. Bundy’s best ERA came in the shortened 2020 season, where his ERA was 3.60. If the Twins pitching coach can help Bundy make some improvements, the Twins might have a diamond in the rough with Bundy.

Championships Won by the Minnesota Twins

The Twins have won championships as both the Washington Nationals and the Minnesota Twins. In their history as a team, they have won the World Series three times, the AL Pennant six times, the AL West Division title four times, and the AL Central Division title eight times. The bulk of the Twins division title wins would come in baseball’s modern era.

While they were in Washington, the team won the World Series in 1924. The Washington Nationals team also won the AL Pennant in 1924, 1925, and 1933. They had no division titles due to divisions not being a part of MLB until the 1969 season.

Since moving to Minnesota, the Twins won the World Series in 1987 and 1991. They would win the AL Pennant in 1965, 1987, and 1991. When it comes to their division titles, the Twins won the AL West Division title in 1969, 1970, 1987, and 1991, and the AL Central Division title in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2019, and 2020.

Important Team Events

The Twins have had special charity events at Target Field for fans. In 2021 the team hosted Catch on the Field, an hour session for fans to play catch on the field and explore the home and away dugouts. The money raised for that event went to the Twins Community Fund.

When it comes to rivalry games, the Twins have a few, but the Border Battle rivalry they have with the Milwaukee Brewers stands out the most. This rivalry first started when the Brewers were still in the AL. Since moving to the NL, the Brewers only see the Twins in interleague play, which has slowed the rivalry down. The Twins will host the Brewers for a two-game series on July 12-13, while the Brewers will host a two-game series for the Twins on July 26-27.

Top Players

The Twins have past and present players people consider top players for the team during their time with them. Past players include pitcher Bert Blyleven, pitcher Frank Viola, third baseman Gary Gaetti, pitcher Joe Nathan, and pitcher Johan Santana. These players played a huge part in the Twins winning years, helping the team win division titles, AL Pennants, and World Series titles.

The current top players for the 2022 season include center fielder Byron Buxton, first baseman Miguel Sano, second baseman Jorge Polanco, relief pitcher Jharel Cotton, and relief pitcher Tyler Duffey. The Twins will look to these players to score runs and keep opponents from having a chance to come back and beat them. In the case of Cotton and Duffey, the Twins brought them in to help with a bullpen that struggled to keep opponents from scoring runs.

Top Coaches

Looking at the coaches in Twins history, two managers stand out the most. These two are Tom Kelly and Ron Gardenhire. While Kelly had an overall winning percentage under .500 when he retired from the Twins in 2001, he is the only manager for the Twins since they moved to Minnesota to win a World Series.

Gardenhire is known for taking the Twins to win the AL Central Division title six times while he was with the team. While they didn’t find success in the postseason under his watch, he has the best record of division title wins among all Twins managers.

The 2022 season will see the Twins look to manager Rocco Baldelli for another year. He comes into 2022 with a completely retooled coaching group backing him up. Bench coach Jayce Tingler, hitting coach David Popkins, assistant pitching coach Luis Ramirez, and first base/catching coach Hank Conger are all new to the Twins coaching staff.

With these new coaches in Minnesota, the team is showing that they are looking to new faces to help them improve in all the areas they fell short in during their 2021 season. These new coaches will have to gel with the team to help their players improve in 2022.
