Minnesota Twins History

The Minnesota Twins organization was founded in 1894 as the Kansas City Blues, a minor league baseball team. When the team joined the American League in 1901, they would move to Washington D.C. and be known as the Washington Senators and Washington Nationals during their time in Washington D.C. from 1901-1960. The Twins have enjoyed more success in Minnesota than they did in Washington. However, not everything in Minnesota has been good for the team.

Even though the Twins would become the first-ever team to sweep in the World Series when they did so in 1987, they would want out of Minnesota. Reasons for the desire to move the team stemmed from having to share a stadium with the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings and also because they had a record of not generating enough revenue to operate.

While a judge forced the Twins to stay in their stadium until their contract was up, the governor of Minnesota would sign a bill in 2006 that approved funding of a new stadium. By 2010, the Twins would move to their new ballpark, Target Field.

Historical Minnesota Twins Stats

The Twins boast a rich history with some impressive achievements. Here’s a look at some Minnesota Twins stats and facts that highlight their success:

World Series Champions (1987, 1991): The pinnacle of Twins baseball came with back-to-back World Series victories in 1987 and 1991. This era, anchored by stars like Kirby Puckett and Harmon Killebrew, is a source of pride for Twins fans.

Home Run Kings: The Twins have a long history of producing prolific home run hitters. Harmon Killebrew holds the franchise record with 573 career home runs, while other legends like Tony Oliva and Ol Nelson played a part in establishing the team’s power-hitting reputation.

Most Homeruns in a Single Season: The 2003 Twins hold the Major League Baseball record for most home runs by a team in a single season (475). This incredible feat showcased the team’s offensive prowess and cemented their place in baseball history.

Championships Won by the Minnesota Twins

The Twins have won championships as both the Washington Nationals and the Minnesota Twins. In their history as a team, they have won the World Series three times, the AL Pennant six times, the AL West Division title four times, and the AL Central Division title eight times. The bulk of the Twins division title wins would come in baseball’s modern era.

While they were in Washington, the team won the World Series in 1924. The Washington Nationals team also won the AL Pennant in 1924, 1925, and 1933. They had no division titles due to divisions not being a part of MLB until the 1969 season.

Since moving to Minnesota, the Twins won the World Series in 1987 and 1991. They would win the AL Pennant in 1965, 1987, and 1991. When it comes to their division titles, the Twins won the AL West Division title in 1969, 1970, 1987, and 1991, and the AL Central Division title in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2019, and 2020.

Important Team Events

The Twins have had special charity events at Target Field for fans. In 2021 the team hosted Catch on the Field, an hour session for fans to play catch on the field and explore the home and away dugouts. The money raised for that event went to the Twins Community Fund.

When it comes to rivalry games, the Twins have a few, but the Border Battle rivalry they have with the Milwaukee Brewers stands out the most. This rivalry first started when the Brewers were still in the AL. Since moving to the NL, the Brewers only see the Twins in interleague play, which has slowed the rivalry down. The Twins will host the Brewers for a two-game series on July 12-13, while the Brewers will host a two-game series for the Twins on July 26-27.

Top Players

The Twins have past and present players people consider top players for the team during their time with them. Past players in the Minnesota Twins stats include pitcher Bert Blyleven, pitcher Frank Viola, third baseman Gary Gaetti, pitcher Joe Nathan, and pitcher Johan Santana. These players played a huge part in the Twins winning years, helping the team win division titles, AL Pennants, and World Series titles.

The current top players for the 2022 season include center fielder Byron Buxton, first baseman Miguel Sano, second baseman Jorge Polanco, relief pitcher Jharel Cotton, and relief pitcher Tyler Duffey. The Twins will look to these players to score runs and keep opponents from having a chance to come back and beat them. In the case of Cotton and Duffey, the Twins brought them in to help with a bullpen that struggled to keep opponents from scoring runs.

Top Coaches

Looking at the coaches in Twins history, two managers stand out the most. These two are Tom Kelly and Ron Gardenhire. While Kelly had an overall winning percentage under .500 when he retired from the Twins in 2001, he is the only manager for the Twins since they moved to Minnesota to win a World Series.

Gardenhire is known for taking the Twins to win the AL Central Division title six times while he was with the team. While they didn’t find success in the postseason under his watch, the Minnesota Twins stats show he has the best record of division title wins among all Twins managers.

Current Manager: Rocco Baldelli
