Santa Clara Broncos Summary

The men’s college basketball program at Santa Clara University dates all the way back to 1904, and the Broncos have a solid history of excellence. This program has gone more than 25 years without an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, but they used to be a team that was always in the mix.

Santa Clara plays their college basketball games at the Leavey Center, which has a capacity of 4,500 people. The Broncos might be struggling at this current time, but the basketball program does have a winning percentage of right around .504.

The Santa Clara Broncos are members of the West Coast Conference, and that league has started to pass them up a bit. There was a time when Santa Clara was one of the top teams in the league, especially in the late 1960s and late 1990s.

The 2021-22 season for the Broncos has gotten off to a great start, and they could have a chance to reach the postseason if they continue to play well.

Santa Clara Broncos History

Santa Clara first introduced men’s college basketball in 1904 and the school has racked up over 1,400 wins since that time. The Broncos are still looking for their first-ever NCAA Tournament championship, but they have had a number of big runs throughout history.

The best season in the history of Santa Clara basketball came back in 1952 when the Broncos advanced all the way to the Final Four. This college basketball program has yet to win a National Championship, but that’s an unrealistic goal in most years.

This program has made 11 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, but the most recent bid was received all the way back in 1996. The Broncos have won just two West Coast Conference titles, with the most recent one coming in 1993.

The 1980s saw the Broncos compete in the NIT Tournament four different times, but with very limited success.

2022 Key Stats

Championships Won by the Team

Santa Clara is still searching for its first-ever NCAA Tournament title, but the team was able to reach the Final Four all the way back in 1952. There were four other appearances in the Elite Eight, but this Broncos just have not been able to pull through and go all the way.

Santa Clara has won nine regular-season conference titles, and it has won the conference tournament two times (1987, 1993). Those two tournament championships allowed the Broncos to reach the NCAA Tournament.

There have been two postseason tournament titles for Santa Clara with one coming in the CIT and the CBI each. The Broncos won the CIT back in 2011 and were the CBI Champions in 2013.

This program has had plenty of success, but it seems as if they are now further away than ever from winning an NCAA title.

Important Team Events

The West Coast Conference Tournament is always a huge event for the Santa Clara Broncos as it gives the team a chance to reach the NCAA Tournament. The Broncos have not had any big runs in that tournament of late, but the 2021-22 season could change things.

Obviously, the NCAA Tournament is the ultimate goal for any college basketball tournament, but Santa Clara hasn’t appeared in that event in over 20 years. There are other postseason tournaments now and the Santa Clara Broncos have made some appearances in those events. Fans hope this will be the year they have an impressive performance in the March Madness.

The two biggest rivals of Santa Clara are the San Francisco Dons and the Saint Mary’s Gaels. These games amount to some of the biggest of the year, and will always draw massive crowds.

Carroll Williams led the Broncos basketball program from 1970-92 and he was able to rack up 341 victories during that time. Williams did struggle to get his team to the NCAA Tournament as there was just one appearance during his tenure.

Dick Davey took over after Williams left and he guided the Broncos to 251 wins. Davey also led Santa Clara to three conference titles and three appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

Bob Feerick is another top coach in the history of this program and he took the team to four NCAA Tournaments from 1950-62. It was under the direction of these three men that this program was a national powerhouse nearly every single year.
