Iowa Hawkeyes Football Team

Iowa is a Division I FBS school located in Iowa City, Iowa. The Hawkeyes are a member of the Western Division in the Big Ten Conference. Iowa is one of a very select few schools that have had the same nickname in their entire playing career. The team became known as the Hawkeyes as early as 1859.

Football became a club sport at Iowa in 1872. It was not until 1889 that Iowa would recognize football as a varsity sport. Iowa joined the Western conference in 1900, which would eventually be named the Big Ten conference as most would know it today.

Iowa plays their football games at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes have played in Kinnick Stadium for 92 years. There have been several different projects completed to the stadium, with the most recent in 2019, where the school added more club-room style seating.

Recent Iowa History

Big News for the Hawkeyes this offseason involved two new hires to the coaching staff. Ladell Betts, a former running back at Iowa, will take over the running backs coach position. Betts has spent the last few seasons working at the high school level, spending a couple of years as an offensive coordinator as well as a couple of years as a head coach.

George Barnett will start the year as the offensive lineman coach. Barnett has spent the last eight seasons as an offensive line coach in some capacity. These two new hires will look to improve the ground game, especially for the Hawkeyes in 2021.

Key Players in Iowa History

Dallas Clark was chosen in the first round in 2003 by the Indianapolis Colts. As a tight end at Iowa, he was named the John Mackey Award recipient, which is awarded to the most outstanding tight end in college football. He was All-Big Ten as well as an All-American while with Iowa.

Josey Jewell was a linebacker for the Hawkeyes from 2014-2017. Jewell only started four games his freshman year but started every game thereafter. He was second-team all-conference his sophomore and junior season. His senior year, he led the Big Ten in tackles, was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, and won the Jack Lambert Award given to the nation’s top linebacker.

T.J. Hockenson is a tight end for the Detroit Lions who attended Iowa. In 2018, Hockenson was dominant in the Big Ten at his position. He was awarded the John Mackey Award, the Kwallick-Clark Award, and was first-team All Big Ten. Hockenson was drafted eighth overall to the Detroit Lions in 2019.

George Kittle may be the most recognized name amongst football fans. Since being in the NFL, Kittle has been regarded as one of the best tight ends in the league. This was not the case at Iowa, where he finished his four-year career with only 48 receptions, 737 yards, and ten touchdowns. Kittle did not get drafted until the fifth round by the 49ers.

Key Championships

Since 1900, Iowa has won the Big Ten conference championship 12 times. In the last two decades, Iowa has only won the conference championship twice. Iowa claims five national championships during the very early start of their college football history.

Conference Outlook

The Big Ten Conference is one of the top conferences in all of college football. With teams like Ohio State and Michigan in the conference, Iowa is going to have to have a great season to compete in the conference this season. Coming into 2021, Iowa was ranked 18th in the AP preseason poll, marking their best ranking since 2016.

While 18th is great, there were three other Big Ten teams ahead of the Hawkeyes. Iowa has a veteran-based team which will help as the season goes on. Iowa plays a very tough early-season schedule with two ranked opponents back-to-back.

Iowa Coaching History

Burt Ingwersen was the first coach in Iowa history to make it eight seasons. Ingwersen was the head coach from 1924-1931. In those eight seasons, Ingwersen only recorded two losing seasons. He had an overall record of 33-27-4 while at Iowa.

Eddie Anderson took the coaching position shortly after Ingwersen left in 1939. Anderson was with the team until 1942 when he took a leave of absence to assist in the medical tents during World War II. He returned to Iowa in 1946. He accumulated a 35-33-2 overall record while with Iowa.

Hayden Fry is one of the longest-tenured football coaches at any university, coaching the Hawkeyes from 1979-1998. Fry led the Hawkeyes to 14 bowl games and three Big Ten titles. He had an overall record of 143-89-6. When Fry retired, he was the winningest coach in Iowa history.

Fry’s successor, and current Iowa coach, is Kirk Ferentz. 2021 will be Ferentz’s 22nd season with Iowa. Ferentz started slow, with his first two seasons a real struggle, but he was able to get things turned around in 2001, taking his first team to a bowl game.

Ferentz took the title of the winningest coach in Iowa history in 2019, surpassing Coach Fry. Ferentz’s overall record while with Iowa is 174-106. He has taken Iowa to 18 bowl games and has two shares of the Big Ten title.
