Florida State Seminoles Team News and Picks

Florida State was once one of the top college football programs in the country, but that is no longer the case. The Seminoles have fallen on rough times, and it is up to head coach Mike Norvell to find a way to turn things around.

The Seminoles are set to kickoff the 2021 season on September 5 against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. This would have been one of the best games of the season when Florida State was really good, but the Seminoles will be big underdogs in this matchup.

The regular-season win total for Florida is set at just five total wins in 2021, and that would force the Seminoles to miss out on another bowl game.

Florida State Seminoles Standings

The Florida State Seminoles are currently in a strong position in the NCAAF standings. With a talented roster and impressive stats, the team has been making a mark in the league. Despite some tough competition, the Seminoles remain focused and determined to maintain their standing and make a run for the top.

2020 Summary

The 2020 season was the first for the Seminoles under head coach Mike Norvell, and it was not a great year for the new leader. Florida State finished the 2020 season with an overall record of 3-6, and just two of those wins came in conference play.

The Seminoles were able to pick up a 56-35 win in the season finale over Duke, and that could potentially give them some confidence heading into 2021. Florida State did suffer a 52-10 loss to the Miami Hurricanes a season ago, and that is always one of the most important games of the season.

Key Players

Florida State has two quarterbacks, McKenzie Milton and Jordan Travis, competing for the starting job this season. Both players should see some time under center early on in the year, and the Seminoles need one of these two players to take over and lead the offense.

Running back Lawrance Toafili is another important player for Florida State this season as he has the ability to break off some long runs. The defense lost five of its top players from a season ago, but there are some new transfers that should see some action.

New Additions

McKenzie Milton is finally healthy enough to suit up at Florida State, and his presence will be a huge boost to the offense. Milton might not even win the starting job in Tallahassee, but he will definitely see some time.

Florida State is expected to start five transfers on the defensive side of the ball, and they all have plenty of starting experience at the FBS level. Jermaine Johnson and Keir Thomas have both been starters in the SEC, and they will help transform the defensive line.

Key Subtractions

Florida State lost five defensive players to the NFL after the 2020 season, and this was not a team with a ton of depth on that unit, to begin with. The offense should feature much of the same talent, but this was a group that didn’t do much scoring, to begin with.

Mike Norvell might be bringing back much of the same roster from a season ago, but a number of those players could get passed up by newcomers.

Divisional Outlook

This year, the Clemson Tigers are massive favorites to win the Atlantic Division in the ACC, but this division is not as strong as the Coastal. There are some solid teams, but Florida State could actually have a bounce-back year if they are as improved as they appear to be on paper.

Finishing in second place is a real possibility for the Seminoles, but teams like NC State and Boston College are going to be tough as well. This is still better than dealing with the likes of North Carolina and Miami of the Coastal Division.

Florida State Team Offense

The Seminoles appear to be set at the quarterback position with Milton and Travis on the roster this season. That will help Mike Norvell’s team initially, but the Seminoles are going to have to find some other weapons if they are going to be successful.

Florida State averaged 5.1 yards per carry in 2020, and this team will be looking to establish the run early and often in games. There aren’t any standout wide receivers on the roster, and they just don’t have the ability to hit on big plays in the passing game.

Florida State Team Defense

The defense could be a real problem for Florida State this season as they lost five of the top players to the NFL. This was already a unit that really struggled to get stops in 2020, and this could make for a long season for head coach Mike Norvell.

Norvell was able to land five transfers this offseason on that side of the football, and that could allow this defense to begin to turn the corner. There are plenty of athletes in the secondary, but stopping the run is going to be a challenge once again.
