Recent History

Hawaii went 5-4 in the 2020 season, its first under head coach Todd Graham, who replaced Nick Rolovich. Rolovich spent four seasons as the team’s head coach, leading the Rainbow Warriors to three bowl games and the team’s first Mountain West divisional title.

Norm Chow was the coach for the previous four seasons, going 10-36 and failing to record a single winning record. Graham is the team’s fourth head coach since the start of the 2008 campaign after June Jones spent nine seasons leading the team to its most successful era.

Key Players in History

Quarterback Colt Brennan, who passed away in 2021, set or tied 31 NCAA records when playing for the Rainbow Warriors from 2005 to 2007, including career touchdown passes (131). Brennan finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting in 2007 and was the two-time Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

Kicker Jason Elam was named a first-team All-American in 1992, finishing his four-year career at Hawaii ranked third in NCAA history with 395 points. He’s the all-time points leader in Hawaii and WAC history and converted a school-record 56-yard field goal in 1992 before going on to a long career in the NFL.

Defensive lineman Al Noga earned first-team All-American honors from the Associated Press in 1986. Noga was the WAC Defensive Player of the Year and set single-season school records with 17 sacks, 31 tackles for loss, and six forced fumbles.

Quarterback Timmy Chang set the NCAA passing yards record in 2004, finishing with 17,072 yards over his career. The 2000 WAC Freshman of the Year, Chang earned All-WAC first-team honors in 2004. He recorded 37 career multiple-touchdown games and had a then school-record six touchdown passes in a game in 2004.

Key Championships

The Rainbow Warriors have won four conference titles in their long history, with the most recent being in 2010 when the team was co-champion of the WAC. Greg McMackin was the coach of that team, which went 7-1 in league play.

June Jones led Hawaii to a pair of conference titles, winning a co-championship in 1999 and an outright title in 2007. The 2007 squad went 12-0 in the regular season and played Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, falling to the Bulldogs, 41-10.

The first WAC title for Hawaii came in 1992 when Bob Wagner led the team to a 6-2 mark in conference play.

Since moving to the Mountain West, the Rainbow Warriors have won one division title. That came in 2019 under Nick Rolovich when the team went 5-3 to win the West Division of the conference. That put Hawaii in the conference championship game, where it lost to Boise State, 31-10.

Conference Outlook

For a very long time, the Rainbow Warriors played as an independent, with travel to and from the Hawaiian Islands making it difficult to play in a conference. From 1909 to 1978, Hawaii didn’t have a conference affiliation, but that changed when it joined the Western Athletic Conference for the 1979 season.

The Rainbow Warriors stayed in the WAC until 2012 when they played their first season in the Mountain West Conference. Hawaii remains in the league today.

The Mountain West is currently comprised of 12 football-playing schools, split into two divisions of six apiece. Hawaii is a member of the West Division.

Coaching History

Twenty-five different men have been the head coach of the Hawaii football team, with Otto Klum recording the most wins. Klum went 82-46-7 as the coach from 1921 to 1939.

In the modern era, June Jones leads the way in wins for Hawaii coaches, going 75-41 from 1999 to 2007. Dick Tomey is third on the wins list for the Rainbow Warriors, notching a 63-46-3 mark in his tenure, which spanned from 1977 to 1986.

Tomey was followed as coach by Bob Wagner, who went 58-49-3, remaining in charge of the team from 1987 to 1995. No other coach in Hawaii’s history has won as many as 50 games.
