2020 Summary

The 2020 season was a good one for the Marshall Thundering Herd, but it was also one that ended without a Conference USA title. Marshall finished last season with an overall record of 7-3, but the team fell just one game short of winning a championship.

Marshall actually started the season off with seven straight wins before losing the final three games of the year. UAB beat the Thundering Herd in the Conference USA title game, and then Marshall lost to Buffalo in the Camellia Bowl.

The Thundering Herd won the East Division of Conference USA by going 4-1 in league play, but the momentum could not carry over.

Key Players

Quarterback Grant Wells is back for the Thundering Herd, and he might be one of the best overall players in Conference USA. WElls threw for over 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns a season ago, and he should be even better in 2021.

Eli Neal and Immanuel Bush are two key players on the defensive side of the ball, but they should have some help. This team lost some of its biggest stars, but there is plenty of talent remaining.

New Additions

When discussing big additions to the Marshall Thundering Herd it is important to talk about the coaching staff. This is an entirely new staff in charge fo the team, and it will be Charles Huff leading the way.

Marshall has added a slew of new players ahead of the 2021 season, but it’s unclear if any freshmen will make an impact right away. Billy Ross has joined Marshall as a transfer from North Carolina, and he should help stabilize the offensive line.

Key Subtractions

Head coach Doc Holliday was not retained by the Marshall administration in 2021, ending his 11-year run. Holliday had the Thundering Herd playing good football in 2020, and his absence is going to create plenty of question marks.

This team also saw a number of key players graduate or test out their luck with the NFL. Running back Brenden Knox was one of the best in the league a season ago, but he is no longer with the team.

The defense is where a majority of the losses came, including Tavante Beckett. Beckett was the Defensive Player of the League in C-USA a season ago, and he is one of three starters that is not returning.

Divisional Outlook

Marshall is the reigning champions of the East Division in Conference USA and they are a threat to win the title again this season. This division is loaded with some terrific teams, but it’s not quite as tough as the West Division.

Marshall is the clear betting favorite to win the East Division title, and they are also listed at +300 to win the Conference USA title. UTSA and UAB are co-favorites to win the West Division, and they are also listed at +300 to win the conference.

Marshall Team Offense

Grant Wells is going to be a nightmare for opposing defenses to deal with, and the Thundering Herd are going to throw the ball. This offense will look the same as it did a season ago, as they still have the same offensive coordinator in place.

The offensive line did lose two players from 2020, and that could have an impact on the rushing attack to begin the year. Marshall will have two running backs sharing those duties, and they will need to run the football better in order to create some balance.

Marshall Team Defense

Marshall was the best defense in the country a season ago, and this unit should be a strength of the team yet again. The Thundering Herd are playing without two of their best players from a season ago, but this team is going to be extremely aggressive on that side of the football.

Blitzing the quarterback has been a staple of the Marshall defense, and that will be a strategy used again in 2021. Marshall is likely going to take a step back on defense in 2021, but this unit should still be one of the best in the Conference USA.
