Recent History

Arroyo took over the Rebels after the departure of head coach Tony Sanchez after five seasons on the job. UNLV struggled under Sanchez’s guidance, going 20-40.

The team’s last bowl game appearance came in 2013, the Rebels’ last winning campaign. UNLV played in the Heart of Dallas Bowl under coach Bobby Hauck, who guided the team for five seasons. Hauck was 15-49 with the Rebels, with seven of those wins coming in the 2013 campaign.

Key Players in History

Picking the biggest star in UNLV football history is pretty easy, as quarterback (and punter) Randall Cunningham wowed Rebels fans when he was with the team from 1981 to 1984. Cunningham led the team to its first-ever bowl game in 1984, as UNLV finished 11-2, the most wins in school history. Cunningham is still the school’s all-time leading passer (8,020 yards) and punter (45.6 yards per punt) and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Running back Ickey Woods was the No. 31 pick of the 1988 NFL Draft, the highest-ever selection of a Rebels player. Woods led the nation in rushing in his senior season, going for 1,658 yards in 1987, averaging 6.7 yards per carry. He was named the PCAA co-Offensive MVP in his senior campaign.

Safety Jamaal Brimmer earned Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year honors in back-to-back seasons in 2002 and 2003. Brimmer led the conference in tackles for loss as a sophomore with 17, then paced the league in interceptions (six) and forced fumbles (four) in his junior campaign. Brimmer was a semifinalist for the Thorpe Award in 2003.

Beau Bell earned the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year award in 2007. The linebacker led the league with 126 total tackles and five forced fumbles. He finished his UNLV career second all-time in school history in tackles with 320.

Key Championships

UNLV earned its only conference title in 1994 when it tied for the Big West Conference crown with a 5-1 record. The Rebels played in the Las Vegas Bowl following that season, defeating Central Michigan 52-24.

The first bowl game featuring the Rebels was in 1984 when the team played in the California Bowl against Toledo. Cunningham led the team to a 30-13 victory over the Rockets to complete an 11-2 campaign.

The 2000 UNLV squad played in the Las Vegas Bowl against Arkansas, defeating the Razorbacks 31-14 to finish off an 8-5 campaign under coach John Robinson. It was the team’s last win in a bowl game, as the Rebels dropped their last bowl appearance on Jan. 1, 2014, to North Texas.

Conference Outlook

UNLV’s football life began in Division II ranks as an independent in 1968. The Rebels played 14 seasons at that level before moving into the Big West Conference and Division I football for the 1982 season.

The team played in the Big West for 14 seasons before moving to the Western Athletic Conference for the 1996 season. The WAC was the Rebels’ home for three seasons before they moved to their current home, the Mountain West Conference.

The league currently has 12 schools in its football membership, split into the Mountain and West divisions. UNLV is among six teams in the West Division of the conference.
