2020 Summary
The 2020 season for North Carolina was one of the best in school history, and it ended with a trip to the Orange Bowl. North Carolina finished the season with a record of 8-4, including 7-3 in conference action.
The Tar Heels finished in a three-way tie for third place in the ACC in 2020, which narrowly kept them out of the ACC Championship Game. A 62-26 on the road against Miami was the signature win for the Tar Heels, and that game created plenty of excitement and buzz around the program.
Key Players
Quarterback Sam Howell is easily the most important player on the roster for head coach Mack Brown, and he is one of the best players in the country. Howell put up monster numbers a season ago, and he will be one of the Heisman Trophy candidates in 2021.
On the defensive side of the ball, Tomon Fox will be one of the leaders of this team at the linebacker position. The defense returns nearly all of the starters from a season ago, and that unit has plenty of key players.
New Additions
North Carolina does return a solid group of starters from the season ago, but Mack Brown also brought in the number 14th ranked recruiting class in the country. On top of recruiting high school athletes, Brown was able to land some big pieces in the transfer portal.
The biggest addition to this team is running back Ty Chandler, and he will be on the field right away. Chandler rushed for over 2,000 yards while at the University of Tennessee, and he should fit in well with this offense.
Key Subtractions
This is where things could get difficult for North Carolina this season as they lost their four best skill players from 2020 and also their top defensive player. North Carolina did have a very deep roster in 2020, but losing this much talent could be a problem.
Running backs Michale Carter and Javonte Williams are no longer at UNC, and they were nearly unstoppable a season ago. Wide receivers Dyami Brown and Dazz Newsome have moved on as well, and those were two of Howell’s favorite targets.
The defense of UNC should be strong this season, but they will be without linebacker Chazz Surratt.
Divisional Outlook
The North Carolina Tar Heels and Miami Hurricanes are both listed at +125 to win the Coastal Division this season. The next team on the list is all the way down at +1000, which means that this should be a two-team race.
Winning the Coastal Division would be a huge step for UNC, but winning the ACC is going to be a major challenge. The Tar Heels are +1000 to win the conference, while the Clemson Tigers are the favorites at -900.
North Carolina Team Offense
North Carolina averaged more than 41 points per game a season ago, and a large chunk of that production was done through the air. The Tar Heels aren’t going to challenge those numbers in 2021, but this is still a team that will be tough to stop with the Air Raid offense.
Quarterback Sam Howell is going to throw the football a ton, and the Tar Heels are going to take shots down the field. North Carolina is not going to hit on as many big running plays this season, but they have a number of running backs that can wear down opposing defenses.
North Carolina Team Defense
The defense should actually be the strength of the North Carolina football team this season as nearly all of the starters return. Trying to replace Chazz Surratt is not going to be easy, but this team is loaded at all of the other positions.
North Carolina forced just 11 total turnovers in 2020, and that will be an area that needs to improve in 2021. The Tar Heels are not one of the biggest and most physical teams in the ACC, but they do have plenty of team speed.
