Penn State Nittany Lions Football Team

Penn State has over 100 years of football excellence. They were independent with all that history up until 1993 when they joined the Big Ten Conference. The Lions have made a total of 50 Bowl game appearances, with a postseason record of 30-18-2. They also have four Big Ten Conference Championships 1994, 2005, 2008, 2016.

Penn State has two National Championships, from 1982 and 1986. The 1986 Championship season capped off an undefeated season, one of 13 the program has enjoyed. As a program, Penn State is 907-399-42 with a .688 winning percentage. The Lions play their home games in Beaver Stadium, which has a seating capacity of over 106,000.

John Cappelletti won the Heisman Trophy his senior year for the Lions in 1973 after going a perfect 12-0. After switching from defense to running back his junior year, Cappelletti rushed for 1,117 yards and 12 touchdowns. The following year he rushed for 1,522 yards and 17 touchdowns. In the 1974 draft, he was taken in the first round by the Los Angeles Rams 11th overall. Cappelletti is also a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Kerry Collins is another Penn State alumnus. As a quarterback, Collins was the fifth overall pick of the 1995 draft, the first pick of the Carolina Panthers. Collins played for 17 seasons in the NFL for six different teams and made one Super Bowl appearance.

Another All-American, Larry Johnson, was a Heisman Trophy Finalist in 2002. Johnson rushed for over 2000 yards his senior year. The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Johnson 27th overall in the first round of the 2003 draft. Larry is a two-time pro bowler, has 55 rushing touchdowns and six receiving. Johnson spent eight seasons in the NFL and played for four different teams.

Franco Harris was a fullback at Penn State, then four-time Super Bowl Champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Harris rushed for 675 yards on 142 carries in 1970 to lead the team in scoring and was drafted 13th overall in the first round of the 1972 draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Subsequently inducted into the National Football Hall of Fame in 1990, Harris was the 1972 Offensive Rookie Player of the Year, a nine-time pro bowler, Super Bowl MVP, and four-time Super Bowl Champion during his career. Harris has 12,120 rushing yards in his 14 NFL seasons.

Penn State has a winning history; in over 100 years of football, they have two National Championships and 13 undefeated seasons. In 1982, the Nittany Lions won their first National Championship with a record of 11-1. The second National Title came in a perfect 12-0 1986 season.

Penn State has also won four Big Ten Championships in 1994, 2005, 2008, and 2016. The Lions have been invited to 50 Bowl Games, with a record of 30-18-2 (.620) win percentage. In 2019, Penn State played Memphis in the Cotton Bowl Classic and came out victorious 53-39.

Coaching History

With all that in Nittany Lions football, the team has only had three coaches since 1966. For 46 years, the team was led by Joe Paterno (1966-2011). Coach Paterno has a record of 409-136-3. In 2015 the NCAA restored Coach Paterno previously vacated wins.

He has the most wins of any coach in NCAA history. Both National Championships and three of the four Big Ten Conference Championships are credited to Joe Paterno. With 37 Bowl Game appearances to his credit, Coach Paterno is 24-12-1.

Bill O’Brien took the Head Coaching job in 2012 for a short run after a stint with the New England Patriots as the NFL team’s offensive coordinator. O’Brien came to Penn State when the team was in a tumultuous state of scandal, with the NCAA having given it postseason sanctions and scholarship losses. After two seasons, Coach O’Brien moved on and took the head coaching job at the Houston Texans.

The present coach is James Franklin. In eight seasons, Franklin has a winning record of 65-28 and a Big Ten Conference Championship (2016), and a 3-3 record in postseason Bowl Games. In 2017, Coach Franklin signed a six-year contract extension, keeping him in the Penn State family for a few more years. The team’s most recent Bowl Game victory came at the 2019 Cotton Bowl Classic against Memphis, ending with a 53-39.
