The Georgia Bulldogs come into 2021 with seven returning starters from an offense that lacked firepower and barely ranked in the top third of the FBS. They lost two games last season to the SEC division winners, 41 – 24 to the conference and national champion Alabama and 44 – 28 to rival Florida.
Georgia will again be battling for the SEC East crown with Florida without Alabama on the conference schedule, but they open the season in Charlotte against perennial ACC power Clemson. While Florida faces Alabama and LSU from the SEC West, Georgia has an advantage by playing Arkansas and Auburn on successive weeks in October.

Georgia Bulldogs Standings

The Georgia Bulldogs have been a dominant force in the NCAAF. With a strong offensive and defensive line, they have consistently been near the top of the standings. In the latest stats, the Bulldogs are showing great promise for another successful season. They sit comfortably in the middle of the pack, poised for a run at the top.

Summary

Georgia finished second to Florida in the SEC East with a conference record of 7-2, with one game canceled due to Covid-19. After their loss to the Gators, the Bulldogs won their final three regular-season games before defeating Cincinnati 24 – 21 in the Peach Bowl.

The Bulldog rush defense led the nation, allowing 72.3 yards a game, but their pass defense was sixth in the conference and 88th in the country. Georgia gave up 20 points a contest, ranking second in the conference and 16th in the FBS. With the exception of their two losses, the Bulldogs held their opponents to 24 points or less, with four of them failing to score more than 14 points. In their bowl game, they were able to contain a Cincinnati team that averaged 37.5 points a game.Even Georgia didn’t dazzle on offense, they were efficient enough to score 32.3 points a game, and except for a sluggish effort in a 14 – 3 win over Kentucky, they posted at least 24 points in every game.

Key Players

Quarterback JT Daniels started the final four games for the Bulldogs and provided a spark that led them to an average scoring output of 37.5 points down the stretch. He completed 67% of his passes for 1,231 with 10 touchdowns and only two interceptions, and if he carries that performance into 2021, the Bulldogs could be a serious national contender.

Leading running back Zamir White scored 11 touchdowns a year ago while averaging 5.4 yards a carry. He is just the top of a group of talented backs that may end up coming at opponents in waves to energize the Georgia offense.

Georgia’s leading tackler, linebacker Nakobe Dean, will be instrumental in leading a group of capable but unproven players that will be replacing a number of departed starters. Dean was in on 71 tackles in 2020 with one and a half sacks.

New Additions

West Virginia transfer Tykee Smith will be an immediate help in the STAR spot on a defense that needs an injunction of talent, especially with the entire starting cornerback unit needing to be replaced from last season.

Ture freshman Nyland Green out of Newton High School in Covington, Georgia, is slated to compete for a starting spot at cornerback, adding much-needed depth to the position along with fellow 2021 recruit Kamari Lassiter.

Key Subtractions

The primary losses came on the defensive side of the ball, including outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari who led the SEC in sacks with 9.5 in addition to his 12.5 tackles for loss in 2020. Ojulari was the second-round draft pick for the New York Giants.

Cornerback Eric Stokes had four interceptions to lead the team and was a key reason the team led the nation in pass defense. His talent was clearly evident to the Green Bay Packers as they selected him in the first round of the NFL draft with the 29th pick.A fellow player in the secondary, safety Richard Lecounte III, will also be a big loss for the Bulldog defense after making 26 tackles, picking off three passes, and recovering a fumble. He’ll be playing this season with the Cleveland Browns after getting drafted in the fifth round.

SEC East Outlook

Georgia will be better on offense, perhaps taking a slight step back on defense, and will battle defending division winner Florida for the SEC East title. Florida lost their record-setting quarterback, but Emory Jones will bring a different dimension to the position after Kyle Trask threw for 42 touchdowns in 2020.

With a scheduling edge, the Bulldogs are the favorites, with Florida a close second, while the rest of the division is probably chasing third place unless Missouri can pull and upset to throw a monkey wrench into the status quo. Kentucky could challenge, but once again, it will take some unexpected results to take place.

Georgia Offense

Between JT Daniels at quarterback and a running back crew that returns virtually every rushing yard, the Bulldogs could make a big leap in the rankings on the offensive side of the ball. With the core of the offensive line returning, Georgia will have big-play ability to add to a strong defense that will just make the entire squad stronger.

Not only is the leading rusher back, but five other experienced running backs are also still on the team to give Georgia not only depth in the running game but also a lot of flexibility. The receiving corps is strong and will provide Daniels a wealth of targets as he looks to make more plays downfield.

Georgia Defense

The defense lost some talent to the NFL draft, but they seem to have found suitable replacements for most of them. They may not lead the nation in rushing defense again, but the drop-off may not be significant enough to keep the Bulldogs from putting a nationally prominent defense on the field.

One of the reasons the passing defense was ranked 88th in the country was because opposing offenses had no choice but to put the ball in the air. With a revamped secondary, the defense may have just reloaded instead of having to rebuild. The SEC race could come down to the game between Georgia and Florida, which last year worked against the Bulldogs because of the passing skill of the Gators’ Kyle Trask. This year, with Florida moving to a more balanced attack could actually work to favor Georgia with its strong running defense.
