Past Winners
Geraint Thomas is the defending champion of the Tour de Suisse. A member of Ineos Grenadiers, Thomas was the first-ever British rider to win the event. Richard Carapaz of Ecuador, also with Ineos Grenadiers, won in 2021. The race wasn’t held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Other prior winners include Egan Bernal (2019), Richie Porte (2018), and Simon Spilak (2017).
Pasquale Fornara, with four titles from 1952 to 1958, is the all-time leading winner at the Tour de Suisse. Three other riders – Rui Costa (Portugal), Hugo Koblet (Switzerland), and Ferdinand Kubler (Switzerland) – have all won three times each. Fabian Cancellara in 2009 was the last Swiss native to win the Tour de Suisse.
Winners on the 2023 UCI World Tour
Remco Evenepoel, who had the shortest odds to win the Tour de Suisse when the eight-stage race started, is a two-time winner on the UCI World Tour this season, having won the UAE Tour in February and the Liège–Bastogne–Liège in his native Belgium in April. He also has a second-place finish at Volta a Catalunya in March.
Other recent winners include Jonas Vingegaard (Criterium du Dauphine) and Primož Roglič (Giro d’Italia). Slovenian Tadej Pogačar leads all riders with four victories.
Spanish rider Juan Ayuso, who had the second-shortest Cycling odds to win, hasn’t placed this season but only made his debut in late April at the Tour de Romandie after missing the first half of the season due to a suspected neuralgia causing issues with a tendon in his lower leg.
The Route
Before making the 2023 Tour de Suisse predictions, it’s important to understand the routes and length of the stages. The Tour began on June 11 with a 12.7-kilometer individual time trial followed by a 173.7-kilometer hilly stage from Beromünster to Nottwil. The three-day mountain stage, from June 13 to 15, features runs of at least 143.8 kilometers. The longest stage of the race takes place on June 16, when riders have to travel 215.3 kilometers from La Punt to Oberwil-Lieli. The Tour de Suisse concludes with a 183.5-kilometer race on June 17 and 25.7-kilometer time trial in St. Gallen on June 18.
Overall, riders have to travel more than 1,118 kilometers through eight stages.
Updates
Swiss rider Stefan Kung, a member of Groupama-FDJ, won the stage 1 individual time trial in an impressive time of 13 minutes and 13 seconds, six seconds ahead of Evenepoel. Ayuso, who has the second-shortest odds to win, finished 10th in the time trial.
Intermarché–Circus–Wanty rider Biniam Girmay won stage 2, a 173-kilometer bike ride from Beromünster to Nottwil, in a finish time of 3 hours, 53 minutes, and 37 seconds. Kung, however, still wore the yellow jersey and the general classification leader. Wout Van Aert, who had the sixth-shortest odds to win, was third in general classification and led all riders in sprints classification.
