Elkhorn Stakes
There are three graded races to look ahead to at Keeneland this weekend, but the most interesting comes in the form of the G2 Elkhorn Stakes. The race, covering 1 ½ miles on the turf, will offer the winner a share of the $350,000 purse. Horse racing betting trends this week will assess a talented field of runners, while British success at Keeneland could increase.
Charlie Appleby has a strong hand once again this week, with Frankie Dettori taking the ride on Bold Act. The four-year-old will be among the top horse race predictions for the weekend after making a winning return to the track earlier this year. He was excellent when landing the G2 Dubai City of Gold at Meydan in March, and he has winning experience at Keeneland after scoring in the G3 Sycamore Stakes.
Stablemate Silver Knott could be his biggest danger in the betting this week. The four-year-old will be making his first return to the track since finishing third in the G1 Hollywood Derby. He typically runs with great credit in the U.S., also finishing second in the G2 Twilight Derby last year.
Oaklawn Handicap
One of the top horse races this week will take place at Oaklawn Park, as the G2 Oaklawn Handicap should be a fascinating betting heat. Annually since 1946, this event has drawn competitors to race 1 1/8 miles on the dirt track. A huge purse is available this weekend, with $1 million up for grabs.
Red Route One looks to be an interesting starting point this weekend. The four-year-old for Steven Asmussen has been kept in very high-quality company throughout this season so far, and he was excellent when landing the G2 New Orleans Classic Stakes on his previous outing.
Last Samurai is a proven competitor around Oaklawn Park, landing this race in 2022 for trainer Dallas Stewart. Skippylongstocking is also a proven performer at the top level in the U.S., and he looked back to his best when landing the G3 Challenger Stakes on his previous outing.
Scottish Grand National
Another weekend brings another large field handicap in the United Kingdom, featuring the Scottish Grand National at Ayr this Saturday. There will be a lot of attention on Willie Mullins after winning the Grand National last weekend, as a victory in this race could put him on course for his first UK Trainers’ Championship.
Runners representing the Irish maestro will likely compete, facing 27 fences across a four-mile course in this race. Macdermott has been the significant market mover for Mullins, and the six-year-old should have strong claims after previously beating Better Times Ahead over an extended three miles at Fairyhouse.
Stay Away Fay brings high-quality Grade One form to the table, but the Paul Nicholls runner could be vulnerable off a lofty weight at Ayr. Sail Away looks set for a big run for the Dan Skelton team after finishing fourth over two miles and five at Ascot in February. The four-mile distance will bring out the very best in him, and he has proven winning form at Ayr.
