A high-quality weekend of horse racing scores and odds is set for this weekend, with a huge day of racing set for Fair Grounds. There will be four graded races to make bets on top stakes action this weekend at the track.
There could also be clues with the Classics in mind, as the G2 Louisiana Derby could be one of the significant horse races 2024 with the Kentucky Derby creeping ever closer. But, who could be some of the best bets on top stakes races this weekend?
G2 Louisiana Derby
The Louisiana Derby will be the standout race on the schedule at Fair Grounds this weekend. It has been a hugely important prep race throughout history, with Gun Runner landing victory in 2016. Recent winners of the race have also been solid Triple Crown contenders, including Hot Rod Charlie and Epicenter.
As one of the important horse racing events this weekend, a strong line-up has been announced. Todd Pletcher has three runners in the race, with his likely best chance coming in the form of Agate Road. The three-year-old last appeared finishing second in the G3 Sam F. Davis.
However, the Risen Stakes could be the most eye-catching form line. Therefore, it could be worth siding with Track Phantom to bounce back to winning ways after finishing a very sound second in the Grade Two on his return to the track.
- Pick: Track Phantom
G2 New Orleans Classic Stakes
The G2 New Orleans Classic Stakes will be one of the most interesting options for bets on top stakes races this weekend. It has been one of the significant horse racing events in the state of Louisiana, with the field competing over 1 1/8 miles on the dirt.
Many winners have emerged as successful horse racing predictions throughout history, including Wild Again in 1984, and Mineshaft in 2003. Todd Pletcher has dominated the recent editions of this race, and he could boast strong claims with Gasoline on Saturday.
Argentinean-bred Super Corinto brings some high-quality form into the race after winning on his latest start in the U.S. He was a winner in Grade One company in Chile last year, and connections would have still taken positives from his effort in the G1 Dubai World Cup on his previous start, despite finishing back in 14th.
- Pick: Super Cornito
G2 Muniz Memorial Classic Stakes
One of the standout turf races to make a bet on horse racing this weekend comes in the form of the G2 Muniz Memorial Classic Stakes. The race will cover a distance of 1 1/8 miles, with a purse of $300,000 up for grabs. There have been some legendary horses to have competed in this race, including 2019 victory Bricks and Mortar.
Adhamo sets a very high standard for trainer Chad Brown. He finished tenth in the Pegasus WC Turf on his previous start and won the G1 UN Stakes last year. However, his draw-in stall one could be a significant concern ahead of this weekend’s race. I’m Very Busy, also trained by the same trainer, emerges as a strong contender for victory in this race following a second-place finish in the G1 Pegasus World Cup Turf.
However, it could be worth chancing Beatbox on Saturday. The six-year-old was a winner over course and distance on his previous start, edging out Strong Quality to land the G3 Fair Grounds Stakes. His speed figures are incredibly consistent, and he is yet to finish outside the first two on his last four.
- Pick: Beatbox
