The Oakland Athletics are giving the ball to Mason Miller. He is 24 years old and stands 6 foot 500, and weighs 200 pounds. His professional experience is limited, but he dominated his eight innings of rookie ball between 2021 and 2022. He started three games in high-A, where he was 0-1 with a 3.68 ERA and 13 strikeouts in seven innings. Then, MLB player stats show, he was 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA and seven strikeouts in five innings in triple-A.

Miller is getting the opportunity to show what he’s got after a quick ascension through the minor league system. The likelihood is that he will start the season in the minor leagues, but he could be a quick call-up if the A’s are hampered on the MLB injury report.

Oakland Athletics’ Revamped Lineup

Lineups are not out, but Oakland has revamped its lineup. It may be able to compete in more MLB games with more power. In addition to Seth Brown, the A’s added the thunderous bat of Jesus Aguilar, who has three doubles and a home run while hitting .281 in 32 at-bats this spring. They also have more speed with Esteury Ruiz, who stole 80 bases in the minors last season, and Christian Pache.

It may be another lean year for the A’s, but they are slowly starting to build a core in the outfield with former first-round pick JJ Bleday starting out in triple-A.

Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners are looking to build on last season, when they won 90 games and were a wildcard team. They have spent money to beef up the lineup, add depth and shore up the rotation. They will be popular among MLB picks to get to the playoffs, despite tougher competition by their American League West rivals.

Plenty of that talent will be on display Friday as ace Luis Castillo takes the mound. He has not looked his best in 12 innings, with 12 strikeouts and nine runs (seven earned) allowed in four appearances. But the Mariners are hoping he gets back on track with the season starting next week.

It will be a challenge for the Mariners’ lineup, who has not seen Miller pitch. But the lineup is full of talent with young star Julio Rodriguez, the additions of Teoscar Hernandez and Kolten Wong, power with Cal Raleigh and Eugenio Suarez, and plenty more.
