We gave the final game of a three-game set here on Wednesday afternoon as the San Diego Padres will take on an NL West foe in the San Francisco Giants. These teams have split the first two games of the series, but the Giants were able to pick up a dominant 13-2 home win on Tuesday. The Padres are currently 4-2 this season, while the Giants are 3-2 so far.
Southpaw Sean Manaea will be on the mound here and is coming off his first start with San Diego as he picked up a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks as he threw seven no-hit innings with a walk and seven strikeouts. San Francisco will have young right-hander Logan Webb here and is coming off a no-decision against the Miami Marlins, in MLB picks where he gave up a run on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Padres at Giants Stats
San Diego Padres Stats
The San Diego Padres have to survive offensively as they will be without superstar shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr for a while. They added some offensive weapons with designated hitter Luke Voit to their lineup in the offseason and should be able to win games while waiting for Tatis Jr to return. The Padres as a team are 16th in the majors with a .702 OPS so far this season and are averaging 4.33 runs per game.
San Diego needs to depend on third baseman Manny Machado to provide the spark in the lineup as he is 5-for-22 with no home runs and three RBI so far. Looking at the 2021 season against the Giants, Machado did a good job as he had a .246 batting average with three home runs and 12 RBI while scoring seven runs in 18 games last year. If this offense can become Slam Diego once again, they will be way too difficult to pitch to.
Sean Manaea made his debut with the Padres last week and made himself comfortable by not allowing a hit in seven innings. A huge reason was the fact that he is forcing hitters to swing outside of the strike zone as he is in the 96th percentile in chase rate. Manaea has been in Oakland for his entire career but has pitched pretty well against the Giants throughout his career as he is 2-2 with a 2.68 ERA with 10 walks and 26 strikeouts in seven starts.
San Francisco Giants Stats
The San Francisco Giants have been a solid offensive team last year and are clicking on all cylinders as they are sixth in MLB with a .753 OPS and are averaging five runs per game thus far. First baseman Brandon Belt has been doing well so far as he is 7-for-16 with two home runs and three RBI. Belt has not been able to get going in his career against Manaea as he is just 2-for-13, with both hits being doubles and a hit by pitch. His .154/.214/.308 slashline needs to improve against a solid pitcher in the division, so it will be a huge plus if he could be a good hitter here.
Logan Webb has been one of the best pitchers inside of his own building as last season, he pitched 13 games at Oracle Park and was 6-0 with a 1.96 ERA with 15 walks compared to 86 strikeouts. In his first start, he was able to force soft contact as he is in the 76th percentile in average exit velocity. He will need to figure out how to pitch against a very loaded San Diego lineup if he wants to take that next step here.

Conclusion
This should be a very interesting game as both teams have a win and want to take the rubber matchup in this series. San Francisco has been one of the best teams on the mound this season as they are pitching to a 2.93 ERA so far, while San Diego is at a 4.50 ERA as of this writing.
On Tuesday, the Giants were able to knock Yu Darvish out after just 1.2 innings and attacked the bullpen, so they have shown the ability to tire out some of the San Diego arms. San Fran was 6-for-10 with runners in scoring position while San Diego was just 1-for-12, and that momentum will likely carry into today’s game. All in all, go with the San Francisco Giants to defend their home turf and win here.
