Let’s see which team is the one who takes the win on this Chanticleers at Mountaineers betting preview.
The 14th-ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers will travel to Kidd Brewer Stadium on Wednesday night to take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a Sun Belt Conference matchup. The Chanticleers are a perfect 6-0 (2-0) this season and are coming off a 52-30 road win over the Arkansas State Red Wolves.
Sophomore quarterback Grayson McCall finished the game going 18-of-23 for four touchdowns. The Mountaineers are 4-2 (1-1) this year thus far and are coming off a 41-13 road loss against the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns. Senior quarterback Chase Brice struggled as he finished going 15-of-26 for 133 yards and a pair of interceptions.
Reese Stepping Up
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers have been doing a lot of running this season, especially in the red zone, and with a player like junior running back Reese White, it makes a lot of sense why. So far this season, he has 59 rushes for 455 yards (7.7 yards per carry) with seven touchdowns on the ground and a pair of catches for 28 yards (14 yards per carry).
Looking at his previous game against Arkansas State, White finished with just six Carrie’s for 81 yards (13.5 yards per attempt) with a rushing touchdown. If he can continue this type of production with more touches, it will be hard to defeat Coastal Carolina.
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers have been doing a phenomenal job defensively this year as they are allowing 15 points per game. In their last game against the Arkansas State Red Wolves, they gave up 20 points on 273 total yards of offense (255 passing, 18 rushing).
Coastal Carolina did a great job as they forced Arkansas State to go 3-of-12 on third-down attempts. They also were incredible against the run as they forced the Red Wolves to run for just 1.1 yards per rushing attempt. It’s going to be difficult to beat them if you are forced to be a one-dimensional offense.
Experience Matters
The Appalachian State Mountaineers love to throw the football, and a big reason is because they have a great wide receiver in senior Corey Sutton. So far this season, he has 34 receptions for 492 yards (14.5 yards per catch) with three touchdown receptions.
In his last game against the Ragin Cajuns, Sutton had just two catches for 19 yards (9.5 yards per reception). Sutton needs to be more involved if the Mountaineers want to be competitive here.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers have been a good defensive team this season as they are giving up 23.5 points per game. In their previous game against the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns, they allowed 41 points on 455 total yards of offense (209 passing, 246 rushing).
They need to be better at stopping big plays as the Mountaineers gave up 8.4 yards per pass and 5.6 yards per rush. Appalachian State played a relatively clean game as they only had five penalties for 43 yards. If the Mountaineers could sure up defensively, it will do wonders for the program.
Who to Bet?
There is a reason why the Chanticleers are ranked while the Mountaineers are not. These programs are both as healthy as they can be as only running back Daetrich Harrington is out with an undisclosed injury for Appalachian State, so they are essentially both at 100 percent.
Grayson McCall has 14 touchdowns compared to a single interception and has eight touchdowns with an interception in the previous games. Chase Brice has thrown three interceptions in his last three games, so he is susceptible to turnovers.
