It’s time for some College Football Hot Picks for today: The Fresno State Bulldogs will head to West Lafayette, Indiana, to take on the Purdue Boilermakers.
The Fresno State Bulldogs had a solid 2022 season. The Bulldogs were the Mountain West Conference champions and won the LA Bowl against Washington State. That win was 29-6, while the Mountain West title game over Boise State was 28-16.
The Bulldogs finished 10-4, despite starting the season 1-4. The Bulldogs beat Cal Poly but then fell to Oregon State, USC, UConn, and Boise State before rattling off nine straight wins.
Purdue also had a successful 2022 season, but it crashed in the final game. The Boilermakers were 8-4 heading into the Big Ten title game, where they were smashed 43-22 by Michigan. They then went to the Citrus Bowl and fell 63-7 to LSU.
The Boilermakers also lost their head coach, Jeff Brohm, to Louisville and hired former Illinois assistant Ryan Walters.

Fresno State Bulldogs vs. Purdue Boilermakers Betting Analysis
The Fresno State Bulldogs found the key to success a season ago after the first five games. Most of that was due to their ability to pass the football and play good defense.
The Bulldogs were 27th in all of College Football, with more than 270 passing yards per game. Defensively, the Bulldogs allowed just 20.5 points per game, which was 25th in the nation.
Head Coach Jeff Tedford will miss Jake Haener, his quarterback of a season ago. He threw for 20 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He will also miss top running back Jordan Mims and receiver Jalen Moreno-Cropper.
But he is bringing in some talent with quarterback Mikey Keene, receiver Jaelen Gill, and running back Malik Sherrod. Currently, the Fresno State Bulldogs injuries are minor starting the season.
Purdue’s Aerial Prowess
Purdue was another team that could pass the football. The Boilermakers were much better at throwing than they were running. It will be interesting to see the approach Ryan Walters has on the program in that regard.
The Boilermakers have three new transfer quarterbacks, with Hudson Card and Bennett Meredith getting the first looks. A season ago, Aiden O’Connell was terrific, tossing for nearly 3,500 yards and 22 touchdowns. Charlie Jones was also great, leading the team with almost 1,400 yards. Both are gone.
Devin Mockobee will be the key cog in the offense. He was just 32 yards shy of 1,000 last year. He carried the football 195 times; expect that number to increase even more in 2023. The Purdue Boilermakers odds will go up if he’s effective on the ground.
Fresno State Bulldogs vs. Purdue Boilermakers Betting Pick
As mentioned earlier, we like Fresno State to win this game outright. The Bulldogs have been battle-tested and are well-coached. Purdue is going to have some growing pains to go through this season.
Once the Big Ten season starts, they could be looking for some big-time help. A home loss to Fresno State is not going to help things.
- Barring any late additions to the college football injury report, our final Fresno State vs Purdue picks & parlays are Fresno State at +4, the Fresno State moneyline at +154, and the Over 48 points!
