The AFC is pretty loaded this season as we had some shake-ups throughout the conference since the Super Bowl. Check the AFC Contenders below.
The conference has a few contenders that can challenge for the top seed, and today we are going to discuss each of them and decide which team has the best chance to get the top seed in the AFC for the postseason.
The odds listed in this article are provided by Caesars Sportsbook and can change depending on when you place your wager and which sportsbook you choose.
Buffalo Bills (+400)
The Buffalo Bills have the best odds to win the AFC, which makes sense. Their biggest departures were not on the field, but losing Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen is a big loss.
However, the defense did beef up a little with the signing of defensive end Von Miller; they are primed to compete even more.
Buffalo’s Offense
Josh Allen continues to play extremely well, and with the wide receivers of Stefon Diggs, Gabriel Davis, and Jamison Crowder to help offensively, they have a chance to be tough.
The Bills have a tough strength of schedule as they are tied with the Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers with the 12th-toughest schedule.
Kansas City Chiefs (+500)
After a tough loss in the AFC Divisional Round, the Kansas City Chiefs had one of the biggest AFC 2022 movements.
The biggest move was when they traded away wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins and placed rookie wideout Justyn Ross on Injured Reserve, so there will be a lot of different pass-catching options for the Chiefs.
They now have a bunch of different wideouts with:
- Marquez Valdes-Scantling
- Mecole Hardman
- JuJu Smith-Schuster,
- Josh Gordan,
- rookie Skyy Moore
All being their wide receivers room. The defense will be the toughest part of this team as they continue to try to outscore their opponents, and with the AFC West being incredibly tough, it will be difficult as they feast on one another.
NFL Teams Stats
According to NFL team stats, they are tied with the San Francisco 49ers for the fifth-toughest strength of schedule with a .533 winning percentage.
With these tough NFL matchups, it will be tough to see this team continue flexing their muscles. Regardless of what they have lost, the Chiefs are still one of the most popular NFL picks.
Denver Broncos (+850)
One of the most critical positions to have is the quarterback, and the Denver Broncos did just that by adding Super Bowl winner Russell Wilson.
Now pair that with some wide receivers in Tim Patrick, Jerry Jeudy, and Courtland Sutton on wide with running backs Javonte Williams and Melvin Gordon III in the backfield.
Broncos’ Defense
The defense is solid but could struggle in one of the toughest divisions in football.to get a high seeding playing some stiff competition. It could take a little while for Wilson to get on target with his three main receivers, but they will be a tough matchup for any defense.
Los Angeles Chargers (+850)
Having Justin Herbert under center is never going to be a bad thing as he has one of the best arms in the sport.
However, the offense seems to be very similar from a year ago as they did not change much outside of drafting a couple of offensive linemen in Zion Johnson at right guard and Jamaree Salyer at left guard.
The biggest splash in the offseason was trading with the Chicago Bears to acquire outside linebacker Khalil Mack.
Chargers’ Defense
This team really is in a prime position to continue being a force with a defense consisting of:
- Mack
- Joey Bosa
- Asanta Samuel Jr
- J.C. Jackson
- Derwin James Jr.
The Los Angeles Chargers are going to struggle with the 10th-toughest strength of schedule in this upcoming season with a .519 winning percentage.
Cleveland Browns (+900)
When you talk about movement happening in the AFC, you start with the Cleveland Browns as they decided to change from having Baker Mayfield under center to possibly having Deshaun Watson, depending on his availability with his looming suspension.
They decided to trade Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers for draft compensation and now have Watson starting with an incredible offensive line and running back room in Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt as a 1-2 punch. This drastically altered their NFL odds.
Browns’ Draft Pick
Then we have to talk about the trade to get wide receiver Amari Cooper from the Dallas Cowboys for draft picks and make him the top pass-catcher on the team.
They are tied with the New York Jets for 17th with a .495 winning percentage from their schedule this season and should be a prime team to target if Watson can play.
