There are a number of different scenarios that could play out when the first round of the NFL Draft kicks off on April 27. One of the major dominos fell well before draft knight when the Carolina Panthers traded for the No. 1 overall pick. With a deep quarterback class featuring a lot of high-end talent, the Panthers wanted to make sure they get their man. What many 2023 mock NFL Draft selections will show you is that Carolina is set to take Alabama quarterback Bryce Young. What will happen with the choices behind Young seems to be up for debate. When it comes to NFL Draft prop bets, there may be some value in taking a few plus-money options for who will be chosen behind Young.
With how the landscape has shifted, it appears the top three picks won’t all be signal callers.
Little Frame, Big Passer
There was a lot of time spent in the offseason debating about which quarterback would be taken first, Young or Ohio State product C.J. Stroud. However, there has been a lot of information that came out recently that has made NFL Draft predictions more difficult. Young is a -1000 favorite to be chosen first, while Stroud (+2500) has fallen behind Kentucky quarterback Will Levis (+450) to be taken with the top spot.
Young’s numbers in college were off the charts. He won the Heisman Trophy two seasons ago and tossed more than 35 touchdown passes during his two years as the Alabama Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback. The only knock against Young has been his 5-foot-10, 204-pound frame, which is smaller than the typical NFL starting quarterback.
Levis and Wilson Draw More Attention
Tyree Wilson appears to be the player ready to crash the top three and break up an early run on quarterbacks. Wilson, who is +150 to be chosen second and +300 to be taken third, has even surged ahead of Alabama’s Will Anderson to be the top defensive player taken. Tyree Wilson, who has the buzz of going to Houston Texans with the No. 2 pick, played collegiately at Texas Tech.
Wilson has seven sacks and forced a fumble last season with the Red Raiders. It would be surprising if Houston doesn’t choose a quarterback in this spot because the Texans don’t have a bona fide star quarterback on their roster.
Stroud’s Profile Sinks
Anyone looking for how the NFL Draft works should take a look at the story of Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud. Once considered a top candidate to be the No. 1 pick, Stroud has seen NFL Draft prop bets on him tumble as the big day approaches. He is now +2500 to be taken first, +275 to be taken second, and +275 to be taken third.
What’s the Deal with Kyler Murray?
One of the NFL Draft prop bets on if three straight quarterbacks will need to take into consideration that Arizona, which holds the No. 3 picks, has Kyler Murray on the roster. Murray has had an up-and-down NFL career. Murray is undersized and has had issues where he’s battled with the team over his contract and with how much prep work to put into games.
As a starter, Murray is 25-31-1 in his four seasons. Murray struggled with injuries last season, only playing 11 games. Murray, who relies on his legs a lot, may also see durability issues as his career goes on. Arizona will be in a tough spot about where to draft a player, as the Cardinals could use help throughout their lineup.
