One of the most interesting mysteries in the U.S. Presidential election process is when the nominees from the Democrat and Republican parties select who their running mate will be. Many online sportsbooks offer election betting lines, but getting your wagers in as early as possible is essential in getting the best payout.

In the last Presidential election, Joe Biden chose his running mate, Kamala Harris, less than three months before voters went to the polls. He decided he would choose a female running mate early in his election bid, with online sportsbooks placing Harris as the favorite in Vice President nominee odds before Biden made his choice on August 12, 2020.

Former President Donald Trump was the incumbent in the 2020 election and already had Mike Pence as his Vice President. However, speculation was that he would replace Pence with Nikki Haley to equal the Democrats and have a woman on the ticket. Ultimately, Trump continued his campaign with Pence as his running mate, who was also the huge favorite at online bookmakers.

Election Betting

Vice President nominee odds and  Election betting odds might not be as popular as wagering on sports, but many people now enjoy betting on various novelty topics, like TV talent shows and celebrity marriages. Election betting lines are mainly based on the choices of the voting public, which is why it can sometimes be challenging to predict the direction millions of voters will lean.

Just as in sports betting, the Politics odds posted for a Presidential election will have two candidates to bet on, one from each party. Familiarizing yourself with the U.S. political landscape and keeping up with the news is a great way to understand how people will vote. U.S. voters typically support candidates from their own party, which can also help you determine which candidate is more likely to win.

Simplicity in Prediction

The best thing about betting on Vice President nominee odds is that you only have to predict who the Presidential nominee will select as their running mate. This makes the betting process much simpler after the Presidential candidates have been chosen from each party.

However, because the next election is still far away from the primary, there are dozens of prospective Vice Presidential candidates to wager on at this stage of the process. As such, there’s no early speculation from the Presidential candidates on who their pick might be.

Betting on the Vice President

If you’re planning to bet on politics or the Vice Presidential picks in 2024, it may help to look at past picks over the last few decades and why they were chosen. Candidates will often pick a VP to target a specific voting demographic, which seems to be the current trend. They have also picked candidates based on current events happening in the country.

As things stand right now, there are some interesting choices for who might be the next VP:

Democratic Nominee

Candidate Odds
Kamala Harris -800
Pete Buttgieg +2500
Amy Klobuchar +1500
Gretchen Whitmer +2500
Liz Cheney +5000
Michelle Obama +3000

Republican Nominee

Candidate Odds
Marjorie Taylor Greene +1000
Ron DeSantis +2000
Tulsi Gabbard +1400
Nikki Haley +300
Kari Lake +300
Kristi Noem +900

In the 2000 election, when the country was at the height of terrorist concerns, George W. Bush made the strategic choice of Dick Cheney, who had international experience as an interventionist and was a career Washington insider. This pick was the correct one for Bush after Democratic nominee Al Gore made the uninspired choice of Joe Lieberman as his running mate.

An example of this strategy was in 2008 when Barack Obama confirmed the popular next President prediction by easily winning the election. John McCain unsuccessfully chose Sarah Palin as his running mate early to hopefully lure female votes away from the Democrats. However, many bettors profited from McCain’s pick by betting on the former Alaska governor.
