Overview
Tuesday’s Premier League schedule includes an intriguing matchup between Everton and Newcastle. This is perhaps the most surprising relegation six-pointer of the season. Not surprisingly, Newcastle is currently in the relegation zone and hoping to find a way out.
However, Everton is just four points ahead of Newcastle and only has a three-point cushion above the relegation zone, with the Toffees hoping that a recent managerial change can get them out of trouble.
Last Game Records
These two teams have yet to meet this season. That means it’s been over a year since the Toffees and Magpies last met. However, Newcastle pulled the double over Everton last season, winning 2-1 at home in November and beating the Toffees 2-0 on the road in late January of 2021.
More recently, Everton returned from the international break with an impressive 4-1 win over Brentford in the FA Cup over the weekend. However, the Magpies haven’t played since a 1-0 win over Leeds on January 22.
Matchup Information
- Kickoff is scheduled for 2:45 EST
- On Tuesday, February 8, 2022,
- At St. James’ Park in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.
Everton vs Newcastle Betting Analysis
Newcastle Betting Analysis
Newcastle is just two months removed from a managerial change that saw Eddie Howe take over control of the Magpies. Howe has overseen just two wins in his first 12 matches, as well as the Magpies getting knocked out of the FA Cup by Cambridge United.
However, Newcastle does have five draws during that stretch, including one against Manchester United, so one could argue that Howe has the Magpies moving in the right direction.
One positive sign is that Newcastle has conceded just three goals in its last four games. They gave up 11 goals during a three-game stretch in December, albeit against Liverpool, Leicester City, and Manchester City.
Clearly, the last four matches have been an improvement, with Newcastle also signing Brighton’s Dan Burn in late January to improve their defense.
Of course, scoring goals remains Newcastle’s biggest problem. The Magpies have gone nine straight games without scoring more than one goal in a match, so that’s something that hasn’t improved yet under Howe.
However, the potential is there with Chris Wood joining the attack last month to join the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin.
Everton Betting Analysis
It’s truly a new era for Everton, with former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard replacing Rafa Benitez as manager. Lampard has quickly endeared himself to the fanbase with a 4-1 win over Brentford in his debut.
However, he still has a lot of work to do with Everton losing three straight Premier League matches and finding themselves in a relegation battle.
In fairness, the Toffees have been dealing with a vast array of injuries this season. Striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has only played in six Premier League matches, explaining why he has just three goals. The likes of Richarlison, Demari Gray, and Andros Townsend have struggled to fill the void.
On the other hand, Everton has a disappointing defensive record this season despite having England goalie Jordan Pickford protecting their net. The Toffees have gone 11 games since their last clean sheet.
They’ve also allowed nine goals in their last five matches across all competitions, so finding a way to shore up the defense will be a priority for Lampard.
Team Updates
As mentioned, Everton has been hit hard by the injury bug this season. Calvert-Lewin and Josh King are absent from the attack right now.
Meanwhile, Michael Keane is unavailable for the Everton backline while the midfield is currently missing Tom Davies, Fabian Delph, and Abdoulaye Doucoure.
As for Newcastle, striker Callum Wilson is missing in action and won’t be back anytime soon. However, the Magpies should have the rest of their first-choice players available.
- Newcastle has allowed one goal or less in four straight matches.
- Newcastle has scored one goal or less in nine straight matches.
- Both teams have scored in eight of Everton’s last nine matches.
- Everton has scored ten goals in its last ten matches.
Everton vs Newcastle Betting Analysis
There are big questions on each side of this matchup. For Everton, Lampard’s tenure got started with a bang in the FA Cup.
But the Toffees have to find a way to carry that over to the Premier League. Lampard also has a huge challenge ahead of him to fix the Everton defense.
As for the Magpies, they are dealing with an exceptionally long layoff. Will they be sharp in their return to action following the international break? Also, will the Magpies be able to get their attack going with Wilson still sidelined?
Everton vs Newcastle Betting Prediction
The betting news on this matchup is close to even. Bookmakers have the Newcastle moneyline at +150 and the Everton moneyline at +170. That makes Newcastle a slight favorite at home, although the moneyline for a draw is the most lucrative at +230.
Given how things have gone lately for both sides, it’s likely that there will be goals scored by both Everton and Newcastle. Oddly enough, Everton seems the more likely team to both concede multiple goals and score multiple goals.
Each team knows that three points would be massive for their goal of getting out of the relegation zone. But that could lead to a stalemate, which is where most of the betting value is in this match.
