The Mutua Madrid Open, one of nine ATP 1000 Masters events, is ongoing this week in Spain, but as the calendar switches to May it’s time to look ahead of the 2024 French Open at Roland Garros. One of four grand slams on the ATP Tour, the clay court event takes place from May 20 to June 9, including qualifying.

Past Champions
Novak Djokovic, the current world No. 1, is the defending champion at Roland Garros. Djokovic beat Casper Ruud in the 2023 French Open final, winning for the third time at Roland Garros since 2016. Rafael Nadal has dominated the tournament, winning 14 times since 2005; no other player has dominated any event like the “King of Clay” has in the odds to win Roland Garros. Stan Wawrinka is the only player other than Nadal and Djokovic to win the French Open since 2010.
Top 3 Seeds
Novak Djokovic
Djokovic is still the world No. 1, despite not having played much to start this season, but is surprisingly second in Roland Garros winner odds. He’s a three-time champion at the event, but hasn’t looked like his usual self in 2024. He lost to Ruud in the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters, the last tournament in which he competed, and has other disappointing tennis stats, including a Round of 32 loss to Luca Nardi at the Indian Wells Masters.
Jannik Sinner
Nobody has been better than Jannik Sinner this season. The 22-year-old Italian is 25-2 this season and won three times, including the first grand slam of the season in Australia. He has only lost a handful of sets and surpassed Alcaraz for the world No. 2 spot at the beginning of April. He’s a strong clay court player but has never been past the quarter-finals at Roland Garros. That should change this year considering how dominant he has been, especially against top-ranked players.
Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz will likely be the third seed in the French Open but is deservedly the favorite in odds to win Roland Garros. The 20-year-old Spaniard was a semifinalist in the 2023 French Open and excels on clay courts, with a career 128-33 record. He was 25-3 on clay last season and 27-4 the year prior. He has, however, been dealing with some forearm issues this season, so it’s worth monitoring his status in the coming weeks – he was playing well through the first week of the Madrid Open, his first tournament in nearly a month.
Potential Longshot Picks
Without going too far down the board, Casper Ruud is a strong betting pick for the 2024 French Open. The Norwegian is a solid clay court play and was the runner-up in each of the last two years at Roland Garros. He had a strong start to his season, performing better than he ever has on outdoor hard courts, and is now playing well on clay. He won the Barcelona Open and is in the fourth round in the Mutua Madrid Open.
Alexander Zverev, at +1600, is another decent pick to win the 2024 French Open. He’s into the Round of 16 in Madrid but has mostly had a mediocre season, with his best result being semi-final appearances at the Australian Open and Miami Open. He has been to the semi-finals at Roland Garros in each of the last three years and it’s only a matter of time until he breaks through.
- Pick: Casper Ruud +1100
- Bonus Pick: Zverev +1600
