After two weeks of exciting action at Wimbledon, one of the four tennis main events of the season, we now look ahead to the final Grand Slam of the season: the 2023 US Open.
Before that, it’s worth taking a look back at the 2023 Wimbledon finals as well as the early 2024 Wimbledon picks.
Alcaraz Ends Djokovic’s Dominant Run at All England Club
Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic had the shortest odds to win the Wimbledon finals at the outset of the tournament.
Both players reached the finals without much resistance and put on an all-time classic on Sunday at the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club. Alcaraz, the world No. 1 in the tennis standings, won his first Grand Slam last year at the US Open and, despite being an excellent clay court player, was beaten by Djokovic in four sets in the semifinals of the French Open.
There were questions as to whether Alcaraz was truly worthy of the hype he had been receiving over the past year as the future of tennis, but he proved on Sunday that he was more than deserving.
Game of Legends
Alcaraz responded perfectly after losing the first set 6-1 to win the match 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. He matched Djokovic shot for shot and responded perfectly every time he faced a bit of adversity. The biggest moment in the match was an epic 26-minute game in the third set that Alcaraz ultimately won. There were 32 points in the game, including 13 deuces.
The men’s final match attracted a peak audience of 11.3 million on BBC One and was the most-viewed Wimbledon finals in the UK since Andy Murray won his second title in 2016.
Alcaraz, with the win, ended Djokovic’s run of four consecutive Wimbledon titles and retained his world No. 1 status.
Vondrousova Becomes First Unseeded Female Champion in Open Era
The women’s Wimbledon finals was certainly a surprise if you bet on tennis. The betting favorites, including Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, and Aryna Sabalenka, were all eliminated by the semifinals, leaving a championship clash between Ons Jabeur, seeking to become the first Arab woman to win a Grand Slam, and Marketa Vondrousova, who was the first finalist in the women’s draw at Wimbledon in the Open Era.
Vondrousova continued her miraculous run, beating Jabeur 6-4, 6-4 to become the first unseeded champion at the All England Club in the Open Era. Jabeur, meanwhile, is the runner-up for the second consecutive year at Wimbledon. She has the fourth-shortest odds to win next year and sixth-shortest odds to win the 2023 US Open.
Early 2024 Wimbledon Odds
It’ll be a long year with plenty of tennis left to play before the 2024 Wimbledon tournament, but it can sometimes be a good idea to take advantage of long-range Wimbledon odds, especially if betting on up-and-coming players.
For instance, in the men’s draw, you may not get +2500 odds on Holger Rune by the time next year’s tournament comes around, as he’s a promising young player who seems poised for Grand Slam greatness. The same could be said about someone like Mirra Andreeva who, at just 16 years old, has the ninth-shortest odds to win the women’s draw in 2024.
