Current Squad / Roster

Costa Rica had a smooth run in their world cup campaign as they only lost three games. However, they had to go through the Inter-Confederation playoffs, in which they won 1-0 against New Zealand. As a result, we would see Costa Rica again in one of the FIFA World Cup groups.

As we go to the FIFA World Cup, Costa Rica will prepare to play Spain, Japan, and Germany. It would be a tough run for the team, but we’ve seen them do well in a supposedly impossible group at the tournament.

Costa Rica FIFA World Cup Future Odds

Costa Rica is one of the least favored teams to win the competition. They are ranked with the likes of Saudi Arabia and Iran. Their FIFA World Cup odds of winning the tournament is +75,000. One of the reasons for this is that they are stuck in a group with Germany and Spain. Qualifying from the group is near impossible.

As a result, their odds of winning the group are at +3,300. Meanwhile, their odds of making it out of the group is +600, which is also high. Therefore, there is a high chance that they don’t make it out of the group, and their odds of not making it out of the group are -1,000.

FIFA World Cup Costa Rica’s Record

Costa Rica’s first appearance at the world cup was in 1990, and they went all the way to the round of 16. After 1990, they had to wait for another decade before making it to the competition. In 2002 and 2006, they were part of the teams to play in the group stages, but they didn’t make it past that stage.

Then, they returned in 2014, where they had their best run in a FIFA World Cup competition. Costa Rica’s stats in the competition was impressive as they got to the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, they couldn’t repeat this feat in 2018, but we look forward to what they bring in 2022.

Historical Events

Costa Rica’s history at the FIFA World Cup started in 1990, with an impressive run in the competition. After that, it wasn’t until 2014 before they had another historic run in the competition when they got to the final eight.

The country’s best run was at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The team, against all odds, got as far as the quarterfinals. They beat Uruguay and Italy and got a draw against England in the group phase. Then, they beat Greece in a penalty shootout in the round of 16 before crashing out against the Netherlands in another penalty shootout.

Christian Bolanos is the most notable player in Costa Rica’s world cup history. He was part of the team in 2006, 2014, and 2018. His impact on the team is something that can’t be downplayed.

Aside from Bolanos, we have seen some other notable players in the country’s world cup history. Some of the include Celso Borges, Keylor Navas, Bryan Ruiz, Ronald Gomez, and Paulo Wanchope.

Costa Rica Fun Facts In Previous World Cups

Costa Rica went through the entire 2014 FIFA World Cup competition without losing a single game in regular time, including extra time. They had one of the best run of any CONCACAF team, improving the team’s FIFA World Cup betting stats.

Team Squad for the 2022 World Cup

Expected FIFA World Cup Team Roster

The players that helped the team make it to the competition deserve a shot on the team roster. They have to be part of the squad. Therefore, we expect the top performers from the qualifiers to be part of the team as they prepare to take on some of the best European teams and a strong side from Asia.

World Cup Schedule

Costa Rica is one of the teams in Group E, and they are paired with Germany, Spain, and Japan, two of which are highly rated in the competition. Therefore, a tough FIFA World Cup schedule is ahead of the team. They would have to do the impossible to get out of this alive.

In their opening match, they would face Spain, one of the top contenders for the trophy, before facing Japan in the second and ending their group games against Germany. At least five points from the group would help them secure a spot in the knockout rounds, but that would require plenty of work.
