U.C. Sampdoria is one of the younger clubs in Italy’s Serie A, by virtue of simply not being around for the inception of the league itself. While Serie A odds do not value this team on the same level as the elite of the elite clubs, this team has achieved some of the greatest things possible in Italian football during its history. Here, we look at the Sampdoria stats and pertinent information that could be useful when doing some Sampdoria betting this season in Italy.

Sampdoria General info

Sampdoria is based out of Genoa, in the region of Liguria. They play the home matches on the Sampdoria schedule at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, a 36,000 seat venue that the club shares with Genoa of Serie B. When Genoa was also at the top division in Italy, there were two teams playing Serie A matchups at this venue in Genoa.

Sampdoria History

Sampdoria was founded in 1946, and the club has had a very successful run at the top of the Italian football pyramid ever since. They have been members of Serie A for all but 11 years in their history. While their Serie A betting stats have been something of a roller coaster ride, the fact that they have remained a part of the top league in Italy so consistently is an achievement in and of itself.

Sampdoria Records

Looking at the all-time Sampdoria stats, a familiar name jumps out as the player with the most appearances in club history. Roberto Mancini appeared in well over 500 matches for the club during his 15 years there. He has since gone onto manage at high-profile spots like Manchester City, where he broke their 44-year title drought in 2012.

Mancini is also the all-time leading goal scorer at Sampdoria, netting 171 career goals for the club. He is one of just four players in the history of the club to exceed 100 goals scored in his career. Fabio Quagliarella is the lone active player on that list of 100-goal scorers.

Championship won by Sampdoria

There was one season where Sampdoria managed to finish at the top of the Serie A standings. That was the 1990-91 campaign, where they won their first and only Scudetto. That was thanks in large part to the play of Gianluca Vialli, who finished that season as the league’s top scorer.

Historical Events

Perhaps the greatest moment in the history of Sampdoria as a club was their run to the final of the European Cup. In the final year before the tournament was rebranded to the Champions League in 1991-92, Sampdoria followed up their Serie A title-winning season with a trip to the final of that prestigious tournament. Though they lost in the final to Barcelona, this is still one of the fondest memories in Sampdoria’s history.

When it comes to the best manager in the history of Sampdoria, you would be hard pressed to find one better than Vujadin Boškov. The Serbian manager was in charge of the team from 1986 to 1992, spanning their run to the top of Serie A and their run to the final in the European Cup. While bigger names like Claudio Ranieri came after, Boskov deserves credit as the best in club history.
