Current Squad / Roster

One of the nations that many will be excited to see in Qatar later this year is Portugal. It will be the last chance saloon for Cristiano Ronaldo when it comes to a Portugal World Cup success, and they look to have one of the trickier FIFA World Cup groups to navigate. But, you can find the latest Portugal stats and Portugal betting markets for the 2022 World Cup here.

Portugal World Cup Future Odds

Portugal has shown at major tournaments in the past that they have the experience to go deep. However, the EURO 2016 winners aren’t well-fancied in the betting at present for the 2022 World Cup, as they are a 12/1 chance to win the competition.

That makes them the seventh favorite to win the competition. They are also a 12/5 chance to reach the semi-finals. Group H looks to be one of the most competitive, but Portugal is currently the 4/6 favorites to top the group. Legendary forward Cristiano Ronaldo is among the front-runners to win the Golden Boot, and the FIFA World Cup odds currently have the Manchester United star as a 16/1 chance.

FIFA World Cup Portugal’s Record

Historical Events

Despite the nation boasting two Golden Generation of players, the Portugal stats at the World Cup aren’t as good as they should be. Their first generation occurred in the 60s and was headlined by Eusebio. However, they could only finish third in the 1966 World Cup. That was also the only competition that they managed to qualify for being 1934 and 1982.

Portugal’s second wave of generational talent occurred in the 2000s, as Cristiano Ronaldo emerged and lined up alongside Luis Figo and Ricardo Carvalho. After falling short at their home EUROs in 2004, they could only finish fourth at the 2006 World Cup.

Despite the wealth of talent that has represented Portugal, they managed to qualify for just one World Cup between 1934 and 1982. Their appearance in the 1986 World Cup saw them crash out in the group stage. They have fallen at that stage on three occasions during their history, including at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Portugal is currently on their longest streak in qualifying for the World Cup, as they have made the finals in each of the previous five tournaments. However, they have crashed out in the round of 16 in two of the previous three competitions. Portugal was eliminated at that stage of the competition in Russia four years ago, as they were beaten 2-1 by Uruguay.

The Portuguese national team will be able to call upon one of the greatest players of all time in Qatar this year. Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the most celebrated footballers of this generation and holds a number of esteemed records for the national team.

Ronaldo has appeared for his nation more than any other player and has scored a record 117 goals in 189 games. No player has scored more international goals than the Manchester United forward, while he also holds the record for most goals in the European Championships.

Portugal Fun Facts In Previous World Cups

The Portugal stats show that no Portuguese player has ever scored more goals at the World Cup than Eusebio. Despite appearing in just one competition, he scored nine times as they finished third in the 1966 World Cup.

Experience has been evident over recent years for the national team, with Jose Fonte becoming the oldest scorer for Portugal in 2021, aged 37, while Pepe became the oldest player to represent the nation earlier this year, aged 39. Cristiano Ronaldo is the only player to have represented Portugal at four different World Cups, but he is still two goals shy of the record held by Eusebio.

Team Squad for the 2022 World Cup

Expected FIFA World Cup Team Roster

The Portugal squad is expected to be a mix of experienced and youthful players, which could make them an attractive selection with the FIFA World Cup betting stats if they get off to a solid start. However, this is the squad that we could see Fernando Santos bringing to Qatar later this year.
