Team History

Orlando City SC joined the MLS schedule as an expansion team in 2015, emerging from the USL’s Orlando City SC, formerly the Austin Aztex. During its four seasons in the USL, Orlando City SC was quite successful, winning the 2011, 2012, and 2014 USL Commissioner’s Cups and the 2011, 2013, and 2014 USL Pro Championships.

Since becoming an MLS franchise in 2015, Orlando City SC’s stats have not resulted in much success or any championships. Orlando City SC struggled to make the playoffs in their first five MLS seasons, breaking the second-longest playoff drought in MLS history in 2020, losing to the New England Revolution in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Orlando City SC Lions have a new stadium (Exploria Stadium, circa 2017) and new ownership as of July 21, 2021. Minnesota Vikings owners Zygmunt Wilf and Mark Wilf acquired Orlando-based soccer assets, including Orlando City SC, Exploria Stadium, and the Orlando Pride of the NWSL.

Historical Events

The 2007 FIFA World Player of the Year and Balloon d’Or winner Kaká was Orlando City SC’s first designated player. Acquiring a player of Kaká’s fame, stature, and capabilities is always a major historical event for any franchise. Kaká was also Orlando City SC’s first signing in franchise history. Another first in Orlando City SC’s history was a significant event in the franchise’s early years. In the 2015 MLS Superdraft, Orlando City SC picked Canadian forward Cyle Larin with the first overall pick. Larin is currently Orlando City’s top goal scorer of all time. However, Larin left Florida after refusing to show up to practice, forcing his contract to be sold to Besiktas in 2018. The Orlando City SC Lions began their existence on a magical high. In the franchise’s first game on March 8, 2015, 62,510 people filled the Citrus Bowl for the Lions’ inaugural game, a 1-1 draw against New York City FC. In their second game in franchise history, Orlando City SC earned their first victory, defeating the Houston Dynamo 1-0 in Houston.

Championship Won by Orlando City SC

Since joining MLS in 2015, Orlando City SC has not won any championship or titles. The Lions’ most successful season was in 2020, as Orlando City FC betting odds swung from underdog to favorite on MLS odds finishing fifth overall in the MLS standings and losing in the finals of the MLS is Back tournament.  Orlando City SC plays in a yet-to-be-named interstate derby with Inter Miami CF.

Orlando City SC has transferred in Wilder Cartagena (M, Al Ittihad Kalba) and Iván Angulo (F, Palmeiras) via loan, while Alexander Alvarado (F, Liga de Quito) is returning from loan. Nicholas Gioacchini (F, Caen), Gaston Gonzalez (F, Unión Santa Fe), and Jake Mulraney (M, Atlanta United) are joining Orlando City for the 2022-2023 MLS Schedule via transfer.

Silvester Van De Water (F, to Cambuur) and Jhegson Mendez (M, Los Angeles FC) have been transferred out by Orlando City SC.

Matheus Aias (F) was out on loan to Read Oviedo. Aias will not return to Florida from loan, as Orlando City has transferred Aias to Racing.

Since 2014, Orlando City SC has had four full-time head coaches and one two-time interim head coach (Bobby Murphy). One of Orlando City SC’s coaches stands above the others as Orlando City SC’s best coach, current head coach Óscar Pareja. As of publication, Pareja has 38 wins, 30 draws, and 27 losses since becoming Orlando City’s head coach, leading the Lions to the franchises’ only playoff appearances.
