The Gonzaga Bulldogs have had some great basketball teams in the history of their program but, unfortunately, do not have a national championship to show for it.
That’s not to say that they haven’t boasted some big-name players in the past. Let’s take a look at some of them!
Top 5 Players
5. Rui Hachimura
Rui Hachimura averaged close to 20 points per game on nearly 60 percent shooting in his final year at Gonzaga, as he spent three years with the program.
Hachimura was also named the WCC Player of the Year during the 2018-19 season. Hachimura currently plays with the Washington Wizards in the NBA, as he has shown flashes of being a perennial threat to score the basketball in the post and mid-range.
4. Chet Holmgren
Chet Holmgren spent just one season with the Bulldogs, as he averaged 14.1 points on nearly 61 percent shooting as well as nearly 10 rebounds per game.
Holmgren and the Bulldogs only got to the Sweet 16 before losing to the Arkansas Razorbacks, but Holmgren still displayed all the tools that can make him an elite superstar in the NBA someday.
Newest Member of the Thunder
The newest member of the Oklahoma City Thunder has drawn comparisons to Kevin Durant and Dirk Nowitzki, which is not to be taken lightly.
Additionally, the 7-foot forward/center has shown a ton of potential to be a force on the defensive side of the ball, as he was named the West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
Holmgren in the Summer League
Holmgren showed in the Summer League that he can put the ball on the floor, hit the fadeaway jumper, and wreak havoc down in the post.
If Holmgren can add a little bit of strength, there is no reason to not believe that he can someday be in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
3. Adam Morrison
Adam Morrison spent three seasons in Gonzaga Bulldogs, but it was his third season where displayed true promise as a professional basketball player, as he averaged 28.1 points per game on nearly 50 percent shooting from the field.
He also stepped up his 3-point shooting, averaging nearly 43 percent shooting from downtown.
Because of all of his accomplishments that season, he was named the WCC Player of the Year in 2006, earned the Oscar Robertson Trophy, and was the NABC Co-Player of the Year.
Morrison’s Promising Career
Morrison had a promising start to his career with the Charlotte Bobcats, as he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2007 after averaging 11.8 points per game.
However, he suffered a torn ACL injury in his second season in the league, which ultimately prevented him from ever living up to his fullest potential.
He did win two championships with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2009 and 2010, which were the last two rings the late and great Kobe Bryant has ever earned.
2. Domantas Sabonis
Domantas Sabonis averaged 17.6 points and 11.8 rebounds per game in his second and final season with the Bulldogs, which served as a great indicator of the type of player he’d become in the NBA.
Two-time All-Star
The two-time All-Star has also added playmaking to his repertoire in the NBA, as he’s averaged at least five assists per game since the 2019-20 season.
Sabonis began his career with the Oklahoma City Thunder, then blossomed into an All-Star with the Indiana Pacers before moving onto the Sacramento Kings via trade.
1. John Stockton
Before John Stockton’s legendary career in the NBA took off, he starred for the Gonzaga Bulldogs from 1980-84.
In his final season at Gonzaga, he was named the WCAC Player of the Year after averaging 20.9 points per game on 57.7 percent shooting to go along with 7.2 assists per game.
The Mailman Abilities
With the Utah Jazz, Stockton and Karl Malone formed into one of the best duos the NBA has ever seen, as Stockton’s playmaking abilities set “The Mailman” up for some great looks around the basket as well as some of his other teammates.
The Jazz got to the Finals two times during Stockton’s career but was defeated both times by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.
Stockton has the most assists in NBA history at 15,806 assists, which is highly unlikely to ever be broken. Jason Kidd (12,091) and Chris Paul (10,977) are second and third on the list all-time as things currently stand, with Paul being the only active player.
