Caitlin Clark is going to go down as one of the best collegiate basketball players of all time, and he shattered a new record on Sunday. Clark already announced that she would be entering the WNBA after this season, and she gave the Iowa fans one last great performance in her final home game.
After being recognized on senior day at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Clark poured in 35 points to become the Division 1 scoring leader, for both men’s and women’s basketball. The previous record was held by “Pistol” Pete Maravich, and Clark entered Sunday needing just 18 points to pass the legend.
Maravich was able to score 3,667 points during his three seasons at LSU as he was unable to compete as a freshman. According to the NCAAB odds, this mark was viewed to be unbreakable until recent years, but Clark had her sights set on it before the season began.
Pearl Moore is currently the all-time scoring leader in all levels of college basketball as she poured in 3,884 points from 1975 to 1979 at Francis Marion. Moore and Maravich both played before the three-point line, and that is where Clark has been racking up most of her points.
Another Epic Performance
It didn’t take long for Clark to get to 18 points as she was able to have another monster first half. Not only did Clark end up scoring 35 points in this game, but she also had nine assists and six rebounds in the 93-83 win.
Iowa was hosting the Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday, and the visitors were the regular season champions of the Big Ten Conference. The number two-ranked team in the country, Ohio State, will pose a formidable challenge in March.
This game will likely be a preview of the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game as Iowa is the number two seed. Clark got the record in the most unlikely of ways as she hit a pair of free throws with 0.3 seconds left in the first half.
Iowa Hawkeyes games have become massive draws throughout the season, and there was another sellout crowd on hand on Sunday. ESPN brough College GameDay to the event as this was also one of the top college basketball games of the season.
There was a chance that Caitlin Clark would come back for a fifth season, but she announced her plans to join the WNBA earlier in the week. Clark is a hometown favorite with Iowa fans as she grew up in Des Moines and chose to stay home.
Some Ridiculous Numbers
Last season was when Clark started to put up some historic numbers and legendary games, but this year’s NCAAB schedule has been one record after another. In a rivalry game against Iowa State back on December 6th, Clark was able to score her 3,000th career point.
Clark spent the next two months trying to get closer to some historic marks, and other teams were doing all that they could to try and stop her. The month of February turned into a massive celebration for the Iowa star as she just kept breaking records.
During a road game against the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Caitlin Clark became the first Division 1 women’s basketball player to score at least 3,000 points and record 1,000 assists. Just a few days later, Clark set the all-time Division 1 scoring mark by pouring in 49 points in a heroic performance on her home floor.
She now has 17 triple-doubles throughout her career, and she is a heavy favorite to win the national player of the year award again. The Indiana Fever hold the number 1 pick in the WNBA Draft and they are expected to select Clark during the 2024 Draft.
Clark led the Iowa Hawkeyes to the national championship game a season ago, and she will be looking for a repeat performance this season.
