The Florida International University (FIU) men's basketball team was founded in 1982. They began competing in the NCAA Division II at the time and transitioned to Division I in 1998.

Carlos Arroyo is widely considered the most decorated player in FIU basketball history. He played for the Panthers from 1996 to 2001 and holds numerous program records, including points scored, steals, and assists. He went on to a successful professional career in the NBA and internationally.

As of March 5, 2024, the FIU Panthers have not yet made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. They have come close on several occasions, reaching the Sun Belt Conference championship game twice (2011, 2019) but falling short of securing the automatic bid.

Many FIU fans would argue that the team's most significant win came in the 2011 Sun Belt Conference championship game against Western Kentucky University. Although they ultimately fell short of securing the NCAA Tournament bid, it marked a high point for the program at the time.

The current head coach of the FIU Panthers is Jeremy Sheppard, who took over the position in 2020. He previously served as an assistant coach for the program for several years.
