Syracuse Football Team News

In 2018 Syracuse went 10-3 and won the Camping World Bowl, and last year they went 1-9 during a Covid-19 ravaged season, with neither one of them truly representing what the Orange fans can consistently expect. Since running off 15 consecutive winning seasons from 1987 to 2001, Syracuse has posted four winning records, and five bowl appearances in the last 19 campaigns, with the 10 wins the only time head coach Dino Babers has won more than five games in his five years with the program.

The good news is they have 19 starters back from 2020, and the bad news is the team wasn’t very good with them in the lineup. Will they likely go 2-10 in 2021? Probably not, but they won’t go 10-3 either.

2020 Summary

Syracuse was hurt badly by injuries and Covid-19, but other teams were also impacted by similar issues during the season and didn’t finish 125th on offense and 112th on defense in the FBS. The Orange, along with Duke, were the ACC teams that failed to be fully competitive on a week-to-week basis.

Their only win was a 37-20 win over Georgia Tech in their third game, and they lost their final eight contests, coming within a score in only two of their ten defeats. The weakness for Syracuse on both sides of the ball was most glaring on the front lines, making it difficult for them to sustain drives or stop the opponents on a consistent basis.

Key Players

One bright spot for Syracuse in 2020 was wide receiver Taj Harris, who was able to catch 58 passes for 733 yards with six touchdowns. The junior returns for another campaign and gives the Orange at least one experienced option for likely starting quarterback Tommy DeVito.

DeVito will have some seasoned players around him, and if they get better line play, he might even have time to throw to them. As a team in 2020, the Orange barely cracked the 50% barrier for passing, and they won’t see much improvement in their record if DeVito can’t increase that number.

Cornerback Garrett Williams was third in tackles for Syracuse, with three tackles for loss, a sack, nine passes defended, and two interceptions, with one, returned for a touchdown. He will be instrumental in the team’s efforts to reduce the opponents’ 65.4% completion rate and an average of 255 yards per game.

Key Additions

Despite the probable starting status of DeVito, transfer Garrett Shrader from Mississippi State is expected to battle for the job. If the saying “you’re only as good as your backup quarterback” is true, then Syracuse is in decent shape.

The team’s top recruit, cornerback Darian Chestnut out of Camden, NJ, will bring some much-needed depth to the secondary that has exclusively second-year freshmen penciled in as starters.

Key Subtractions

All of the departures that really matter for Syracuse came in the secondary, resulting in the influx of youth in the defensive backfield after a trio of players headed to the NFL. Cornerback Ifeatu Melifonwu who had three tackles for loss with one sack and an interception was picked in the third round of the draft by the Detroit Lions.

Andre Cisco only played three games in 2020 but still recorded an interception. His career was impressive enough for the Jacksonville Jaguars to take him in the third round of the draft.

Another player who had a shortened season was cornerback Trill Williams with a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown. He was signed by the Saints as an undrafted free agent, then picked up off waivers by the Dolphins and made their final 53 player roster.

Division Outlook

Clemson has dominated the ACC Atlantic for six years, although the conference did not use a division structure in 2020. It didn’t matter much to the Tigers, as they avenged their only regular-season defeat to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish by defeating them 34 – 10 in the ACC Championship game for their sixth consecutive conference title.

As many as five of the other six teams in the division have a shot at the runner-up spot behind frontrunning Clemson, with N.C. State a slight favorite, although the Wolfpack have the toughest schedule in the conference. Florida State is looking to return to prior glory, Boston College has a chance to improve, and Wake Forest could again surprise some teams.

Despite the best team in the conference playing in the Atlantic, there is a larger quantity of better teams in the Coastal, making it difficult for more than a couple of teams in the Atlantic expected to finish above .500 in the league. Syracuse has a long way to go to keep from finishing in the cellar.

Syracuse Offense

Improving from last in the conference and 125th among 127 FBS teams that competed in 2020 shouldn’t be too difficult, but it will take a lot for the Orange to make enough strides forward for them to win more than a couple of conference contests. The success of the offense will depend on coordinator Sterlin Gilbert’s ability to rebuild the offensive line, which would allow the unit to utilize an experienced quarterback and their group of more than adequate skill players.

Syracuse Defense

The defense’s performance in 2020 was partially attributable to the anemic offense, requiring them to be on the field for extended periods of time. However, it’s critical that they get solid secondary play from the young group, or it could be another long season, creating an uncomfortable situation for their head coach.

The linebackers are the strength of the defense, but there is potential that the front line can also make a positive contribution, especially given their collective experience. Defensive coordinator Tony White is also trying to install a new scheme, one which he wasn’t able to fully implement in 2020 due to the lack of spring practice and reduced practice time in the fall.
