Recent Ohio State Buckeyes History

The Ohio State Buckeyes have been doing incredibly well as of late as in the last ten seasons; they have a combined 111-12 record and a 73-4 record against their Big Ten Conference opponents. They have been doing well as they won the College Football Championship back in 2014 and have lost the National Championship Game to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2020 season after winning the Sugar Bowl. They seem to be competitive this season thus far and should be in contention for another National Title this season as well.

Key Players in History

The best quarterback in the program’s history has been J.T. Barrett, who was with the Buckeyes from 2014-2017, as he has the all-time leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns. He finished his Ohio State career with 104 touchdowns and 30 interceptions with 9,434 yards and has 656 rushes for 3,263 yards with 43 rushing touchdowns. Their best receiver has been David Boston, who was a Buckeye from 1996-1998. He has 191 receptions for 2,855 yards and 34 receiving touchdowns.

Looking at the rushing attack, they have had some great running backs. They have had guys like Carlos Hyde, Eddie George, Ezekiel Elliott, J.K. Dobbins, and Archie Griffin. Griffin has a massive lead in the rushing yards all-time as he had 924 carries for 5,589 yards with 26 rushing touchdowns.

Key Championships

When you seem to be one of the top programs in the nation, you are measured by the National Championship success. The Ohio State Buckeyes have been doing well as they have eight National Championships, with the wins coming in 1942, 1954, 1957, 1961, 1968, 1970, 2002, and 2014.

When you dive deeper into their conference championships, they won a total of 41 titles. They won a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference Championships in 1906 and 1912 before joining the Big Ten Conference after the 1912 season. In that span, they have won the Big Ten Conference a total of 39 different times. That is the second-most times a program has won the Big Ten Conference and the third most conference titles of any school in any of the conferences in College Football history.

Conference Outlook

The Big Ten Conference has announced a coalition with the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the Pac-12 Conference to counter against the Southeastern Conference’s (SEC) rightful presence. There are a lot of talented programs located inside of the Big Ten Conference with programs like the Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, Penn State Nittany Lions, Iowa Hawkeyes, Minnesota Golden Gophers, Purdue Boilermakers, and Wisconsin Badgers.

As of this writing, the Buckeyes have been a dominant force inside the Big Ten Conference with a 73-4 record against Big Ten opponents since the 2012 season. They have incredible talent, and it should not come as a shock, but they have not been outside of the top-five programs for an entire season since the 2011 regular season, and that is mostly due to their elite status inside of the Big Ten.

Coaching History

The Ohio State Buckeyes have had 24 different head coaches throughout the 121 years that the football program has existed. Alexander Lilley was the first head coach in Ohio State’s history. Their first talented head coach was with College Football Hall of Famer John Wilce, the Buckeyes coach from 1913-1928, and finished with a 78-33-9 record. They first reached the pinnacle of the college football world with head coach Woody Hayes as he won five National Championships with the program and went 37-7 in the Big Ten while also going 205-61-10 in the regular season.

In recent history, Ohio State had big success throughout the tenure of head coach Urban Meyer as he went 82-9 in his seven seasons with a National Championship in the 2014 season. Ryan Day is currently coached as he became interim head coach in 2018 before signing on to become the full-time head coach in 2019. He has a 23-1 record as of this writing, including a perfect 15-0 conference record.
