Oregon State BeaversTeam News and History

The Oregon State University (OSU) Beavers first introduced their football team in 1893 as an independent, non-conference-affiliated team. Until 1915, with only a break from 1899 to 1902, it remained independent, but, in 1916, it joined the newly-formed Pacific Coast Conference (PCC). The PCC was a precursor to the Pac-12, to which the Beavers now belong, but was disbanded in 1959 because of a major scandal involving illegal payments to students.

For the next few years, until 1964, the Beavers played in a revived PCC, as well as making a return to being an independent school. When the Pac-12 was launched (a direct result of the PCC’s failures and originally known as the Athletic Association of Western Universities), OSU became a part of it. The Pac-12 wouldn’t officially be introduced under that name until 2011.

Oregon State Beavers Standings

The Oregon State Beavers have made a name for themselves with their tough, relentless play on the football field. They boast a solid defense, a strong rushing attack, and a well-rounded roster that consistently puts up impressive numbers in the NCAAF stats and standings. The Beavers have a winning record and a growing fan base, making them a team to watch in the years to come.

Recent OSU Beavers History

Since 1964, the Beavers have been a part of the Pac-12 Conference, a conference that has won more national championships in team sports than any other conference. As the name suggests, there are 12 member schools in the conference as of October 2021, but that could change.

The Big 12 has been rumored to be close to dissolving, with some schools looking to target the Pac 12. However, the Pac-12 has said it is against expansion.

The Beavers play their home games at Reser Stadium (formerly Parker Stadium from its inauguration in 1953 until 1999), which has a capacity of 43,363. Prior to renovations of the stadium that took place from 2005 to 2016, the capacity was only 25,000. Reser Stadium alternates with the University of Oregon’s Autzen Stadium to host the annual Oregon–Oregon State rivalry. Since 1954, games played in even-numbered years have been held at OSU and, in odd-numbered years, at Oregon.

Key Players in OSU’s History

OSU has produced a number of high-profile players over the years. The Heisman Trophy went to Terry Baker in 1962, the same year he also won the Maxwell Award.

Baker then played in the NFL for a few years after having been the overall first pick in the NFL Draft in 1963. Baker is also in the State of Oregon Sports Hall of Fame, the College Football Hall of Fame and the OSU Sports Hall of Fame.

Wayne Valley is another big name to come out of OSU. He was a linebacker for the team in the 1930s but made his mark in business. Valley would ultimately become an owner of the then-Oakland Raiders and a founding member and former president of the American Football League.

More recently, Bill Swancutt was the 2004 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, an award that would be given to OSU’s Stephen Paea in 2010. Paea also won two back-to-back Morris Trophy Awards in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, Jacquizz Rodgers was the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year and the Freshman Player of the Year.

Until the end of the 2019-2020 season, OSU had produced a number of first-team All-American football players. The total is 42, with Herman Abraham being the first in 1916. The most recent was Brandin Cooks in 2013. Cooks is a wide receiver who has played for several NFL teams since 2014.

Key OSU Championships

From its inception until 1964, the Beavers won four conference titles – 1941, 1956, 1957, and 1964. It has had one more recent title, which it won in 2000. It has had a successful run in bowl games, having played in a total of 17. Of these, it has won 11.

The most prominent bowl win came in 2000 when the Beavers beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Fiesta Bowl. Under head coach Dennis Erickson, OSU won 41-9 in a lopsided match. Since then, the Beavers have gone to nine bowls, ending with a 6-3 record. Head coach Mike Riley led the team for all of those nine games.

There is another bowl that OSU was invited to play in but which was never able to be put on the schedule. In 1960, the Beavers were to play in the Gotham Bowl, a short-lived college football competition in New York in 1960; however, no opponent was found. The Gotham Bowl was removed in 1962.

The Pac-12 Conference Outlook

The Pac-12 teams are currently located in Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, Texas, Utah, and Washington. The conference is represented by each state’s flagship public university, four other public universities, and two private research universities.

When the PCC dissolved, the Athletic Association of Western Universities (AAWU) was formed. The conference has previously been known as Big Five, Big Six, Pacific-8, and Pacific-10 as it grew. It then became the Pac-12 in 2011, when Colorado and Utah were added.

Pac-12 football is managed differently than other sports in the conference. It is the only one to be divided into two divisions, North and South, and the teams are split into three regions. California has four teams that make up the region, the Pacific Northwest is the second, and the Four Corners region is the third. Four Corners refers to the area in the Southwestern US that contains the southwestern corner of Colorado, the southeastern corner of Utah, the northeastern corner of Arizona, and the northwestern corner of New Mexico.

The current commissioner of the Pac-12 is George Kliavkoff, who replaced Larry Scott in July 2021. Scott retired after 12 years as the conference commissioner.

OSU Beavers Coaching History

The Beavers have had a total of 33 head coaches since the team was introduced in 1893. The first head coach was Will Bloss, who was replaced the following year by Guy Kennedy. For the next several years, until 1900, there was a different coach each year. During that time, there was no head coach in 1898.

Since 1965, OSU has had eleven head coaches. During that time, Mike Riley had the longest tenure, leading the Beavers from 2003-2014 and, in 2008, won the Pac-12 Coach of the Year Award. Riley has also been the head coach of the NFL’s San Diego (now LA) Chargers and the New Orleans Saints.

In 2018, Jonathan Smith was hired as the most recent head coach for the Beavers. He is a former quarterback from the school and also coached there in 2002-2003.

Other notable coaches include Tommy Prothro, who led the team from 1955-1964. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1991.
