Utes Football Team News and History

The Utah Utes Football team made its first appearance in football history in 1892 when they played their first season in three different games. Still, only one counted in the NCAA records for a loss against the now Utah State University.

This game was the beginning point for the Utes in one of their biggest rivalries also, in the matchup called “Battle of the Brothers.” At this point in the timeline for the Utes, history was 1-3, including this game.

Since then, this football team has accumulated twenty-four Conference Championships and a record of 12-4 for Bowl Games, and an all-time football record of 627-424-31.

Hosting first in their first stadium, the Rice Stadium (1927-1997), the Utes has moved since nineteen ninety-eight to their current home, the Rice-Eccles Stadium, with a maximum capacity for 45817, at that time invested by Spence Eccles, which was later on included in the venue’s name.

Recent Utes Football History

In recent history for the football program of the University of Utah, the team has been able to reach eighty wins since joining the Pac-12 in 2011 with an overall percentage of .625. It is ranked in the top five schools in this NCAA Division I conference.

Also, in 2019, they managed to find a spot in 17th place in a season led by Tyler Huntley with a total of 3,090 passing yards total for his team in a year that saw five team members drafted by the NFL.

In 2020, in a historical season due to external factors, the Utes found the number three spot in their south conference with a record of 3-2, this time showing leaders such as Jake Bentley and Ty Jordan, who showed up combining +1,000 yards from both ground and passing game.

Key Players in Utes’ History

In a large list of great football players coming from the Utes, it is worth mentioning some of the most decorated athletes in school history, such as Mike Anderson (1998-1999), who played as a running back and was also a marine. He became a two-time all-conference player in a team, where he shared the locker room with the wide receiver star Steve Smith, who played with both the Baltimore Ravens and the Carolina Panthers.

His most impressive accomplishment was finishing his career averaging the best per-game rushing percentage with 102.4. Later, his career as a pro was developed mostly in the Denver Broncos, where he held eleven franchise records, including rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.

Also, it is important to include Brian Johnson, who played as a quarterback for the Utes and grew to become a coach for the position. In his college career, Johnson held a 26-7 for a starting QB which awarded him as the player with the most wins in school history.

Key Utes’ Championships

The Utes have in their cabinets 24 conference championships so far, since nineteen ninety-two, with an addition of two divisional championships since joining the Pac-12. This being mentioned, their most important decoration happened in two thousand and eight by winning an NCAA National Championship under the direction of coach Kyle Whittingham showing off a perfect record of 13-0 and 8-0 for Bowls.

After beating the forever powerful Alabama 31-17 in the 2008 Sugar Bowl, the Utes were still number-two after following events at other bowl games. Finally, the team was moved to the undisputed number-one spot in the league. In a system that did not consider the margin of victory at that time, the committee could not have ranked the Utes in their top semifinalists to send them to these games. Almost ten years later, the NCAA made the changes and declared the team national champions.

The Pac-12 Conference Outlook

When UC at Berkeley, the University of Washington, the University of Oregon, and the former Oregon Agricultural College got together in 1915, the Pacific Coast Conference was founded to give birth to what we now know as the Pac-12. This conference has been expanding periodically, adding more school sports programs to their tournaments when it was finally dissolved in nineteen fifty-nine.

Due to these changes, the AAWU was formed under the direction of Thomas J. Hamilton, which originally included schools such as California, Stanford, USC, UCLA, and Washington. With the addition of Arizona and Arizona State University in 1978, the Pacific-10 started to have a different look. In June 2010, the University of Colorado and the University of Utah joined the conference to complete the current Pac-12.

Currently, the conference holds tournaments around the Pacific Coast at twenty different sports, including team and individual-based competitions. The main purpose for this organization includes not only athletic excellence but to building strong foundations for academics in between the participants to extend their reach from the field to the classrooms.

Utah Utes Football Coaching History

From a coaching standpoint, the Utes have had a very large history of great leaders in their staff, starting with Ike Armstrong (1925-1949), who was originally hired to coach both basketball and football teams. Eventually, his college football career overshadowed his basketball record. Armstrong had a 25-year career as a head coach for the Utes and has placed first compared to other coaches in total wins history.

Since then, and with many bumps in the road, several coaches have had difficulty getting Utah to relevant numbers and good records. When Ron McBride arrived in 1999, he wanted to take on the team and turn into a very rough defensive group that ranked number-ten and beat four ranked teams that season.

Urban Meyer, in 2003, was able to take the team to a repeat in conference championships in a season where they finished as a very high-scoring team with an average of 45.33 points per game. From 2005 to the present, Kyle Whittingham has taken ownership of the team as a head coach to accomplish an undefeated season in 2008 and claim the National Championship.
